Plus for the most part of the coverage on the Friday and Saturday, V8Supercars are being shown. For the AFL telecast you get fill and lower grade games during the long coverage.
If what is being implied does indeed come to fruition (live Sunday AFL on TEN seems to be being implied on this thread), then maybe V8s live on Foxtel and tape-delayed later on Free-to-Air has more legs than i thought. Ten years or so on and despite all the defences history may well repeat itself........... |

That staggering thing that hit me about AFL is the Herald Sun has over 100 people on staff writing about it. When I heard this I thought to myself how many does motorsport have?

Speedweek ratings - the figures I was given, to use in a Sponsorship proposal for a NSW state championship category, were average of 80,000 nationwide with a peak of about 250,000 people watching. When I mentioned these figures to someone who works raising money for another (minor in terms of current TV coverage) sport in the country they were impressed with the amount of people watching and the very little amount that was paid for the privelige.
Payment for coverage, the production companies that put the footage together charge for the service, it is not their place to foster the growth of the sport, that is the place of the administering body. If that body does a good job, as the NRL and AFL have done over the years, then eventually they have a product to sell to a sponsor (whether that be a naming rights or Television channel) who can make more money than they paid from onselling their association / benefits. Both these sports are run by a sporting association who have at the core of their values the DEVELOPMENT of the sport. AVESCO is a commercial enterprise and must then primarily look after the development of AVESCO, it is run by them alone for their benefit. If as a spin-off some support categories get to run on the same bill then great. CAMS is the sporting body which should have the development of the sport as one of it's objectives. Unfortunately money is a big factor in acheiving that and if you sell or otherwise lose the commercial rights to the biggest product you have then where does that leave you? Instead of bagging channel 10, who do a much better job than other channels in years gone by, be thankful that you see any footage at all. Netball is the largest participation sport in the country and how much coverage does that get? what about Soccer, the largest participation sport in the world and coverage for that is well below that of AFL and league or cricket or even motorsport? |

Surely they wouldn't cancel broadcasting high rating, high attendance events??? ...and what exactly do AVESCO have to do with categories that are not linked to them? Do you see a Coles catalogue with Woolworths specials in it? Point being, the category manager should be doing the promotional work not person X at company Y that has nothing to do with them, except they share the same venue!!! |

-2 hrs @ Kangaroos Breakfast -2 Hours Reviewing the Season -2 Hours Previewing the game, split by.... -1/2 hour Pre-Game Entertainment (Worse than anything AVESCO can dish up!) -2 hours of Footy -15 minutes of celebration/presentations etc -Remainder on interviews after match With Bathurst, it's pretty much all action save for crappy features and mumbo jumbo whilst we wait for the Development Series Race. |

Realistically, V8 Supercars don't get enough coverage as they deserve, WHEN you consider the amount of money, number of sponsers and the attendence and TV ratings for each event. Tony Cochrane is always going on about the fact that V8 Supercars are now the 3rd highest sport in Australia, in relation to spectator interest (I think). This is behind AFL and either cricket or rugby league (I think).
What I would love to see is more live races being broadcasted during the season. They only broadcast 4/13 during the year. Bathurst, Sandown, Indy and Adelaide. I know it's not possible for some events, but imagine watching the QLD race or the Phillip Island Grand Finale LIVE!! As for other motor racing programmes, SPEEDWEEK hasn't the budget (or the air time) to incorporate even more categories. They do a fantastic job on the AMRS and its categories, they covered PROCAR brilliantly, and they cover other forms of motorsport that I never even knew existed. Hell, just give SBS the V8 Supercars!!! |
