Button outperformed Sato by a lot more in 2005, and only made one mistake all season. For the last 2 years hwe's been among the best drivers in F1. I don't see any situation where he had the fastest car in 2004 - usually it was the Ferrari, and other teams had to take their opportunity. In reality BAR were 3rd best behidn Ferrari and Renault upto midseason, and 4th best behind Ferrari, McLaren and Williams in the second half.

If Button's been poor, how bad was the former champion whose career he destroyed in 2003? Is that what this is really about, perhaps?

Jenson lucked out in 2004 otherwise he would have shown more in 2005. But then again he didn't have a car in 2005, right. See my point.

So my question to you as you are obviously agreeing indirectly is this is it man or machine that counts for more in modern F1?
I think we are debating two completely different points here. I am trying to look at a drivers performance by factoring out the car's influence. You are trying to debate that the machine is a more important contribution to speed than the driver. I agree with your point entirely, but its not the point I am trying to debate here.

I don't think you can say best driver, because it all depends on the machinery, as Michael has proved, he romped the titles in the best car, suffered in a bad car.

Before i get jumped on here i would just like to clarify that no driver wins the championship, or holds a seat in the top teams unless they are fantastic drivers.

Agreed, they need to work their way to the top. Fisichella and Alonso were in Minardi, Raikkonen was in Sauber, Schumacher was in Jordan and so on. If you have talent, you're snapped up. And where was frentzen in 1997 in an "unbeatable car"?
