I sometimes use my dictaphone - other times I use my.......(Someone was going to do it!!)
I echo wee Al's comments above and I have used my camera (Set To Video) to record the opening lap of a race. Quite useful when the I too have also made use of the friendly snapper to compile a report - but have always made a footnote that the report was aided by "so-and-so's" photo's.....and never had a problem with it. As for Major Incident forms I just fill in the necessary and then phone RC and ask what times I called for what - again never a problem. I nearly always have my camera in my bag when on post. Like some have said previously, it's common sense as to when and when not to actually use it. Also, I tend not to keep the photo's when I get home. |

While marshalling at Pheonix Park last year, we were at a man made chicane
made from the red and white hard plastic barriers used on the motorways. At our post we had a TV video crew filming on top of a turned up skip. During a race a car collided with said barriers, a large section of barrier broke off and hurtled past camera man at speed, missing him by inches. It took out a couple of tree branches behind him. When we asked did he get that on film? a blank look and quote of "GET WHAT" Moral of story: You dont see everything from behind a camera. Sorry its a bit long winded. |

If you remember a massive pile up at the Bathurst 1000 a few years ago....the Marshals saw the underside of cars riding the concrete wall (me too after ducking)....the cameraman ten yards away was a white as a sheet |

A lot of the charm and fun of Phoenix Park is that the levels of protection are, let's call them "different", from those suffered at fixed venues. Less safe but more fun.

My personal thought on this subject from a down under perspective.
If you're a Flaggie & on duty, forget it. Same if you're an on foot fire marshal. The Observer wearing the headset is too busy but his assistant & anyone not actually "working" I wouldn't have a problem so long as the camera putting away doesn't affect their incident response. Same with vehicle based marshals although the driver should be considered on duty 99.99% of the time. |
