Annoyingly the Op has been postponed despite arriving at the hospital as required at 0730. At 0930 I was told that “too many people had fallen and broken their hips overnight”.
Got to ring up at 0900 tomorrow to see if they can fit me in.

Bad luck.

I was scheduled for an aortic valve replacement in January, 2023. It was to be done by the TAVI method whereby they access the valve through the artery in the groin under local anaesthetic. I went in the night before and was told I would be the afternoon patient the next day (they did 2 ops per day - a.m. and p.m.). Come lunchtime the next day I was advised that the morning op had become a bit more complicated than they expected and there would not be enough time for my op but they would schedule me for the next day in the afternoon but to stay in hospital overnight.
Next day around lunch time I was taken down to the pre-op room and a canula fitted to my wrist for monitoring purposes during the op. I was then taken in to the op room and put on the op table awaiting the surgeon. After 20 minutes or so a nurse came in and told me it would be anytime soon as they were just taking a last look at the xrays. Nothing happened for another 20 minutes or so and then the surgeon came in to tell me they could not do the TAVI procedure as they had just noticed on the xray some surplus membrane on my heart that was in exactly the spot where the replacement valve would go. Therefore, they would have to replace the valve through open heart surgery in a few weeks hence.
So I had to hop off the op table, get dressed and go home. As my wife had gone somewhere that afternoon I decided that I would catch the bus home from Leeds to near York as it went within 300 yards of my house.
A nurse took out the canula , put a plaster over the wound and sent me on my way. As I was leaving the hospital I felt a bit wet around the wrist and noticed blood running down my hand and on to my jacket and jeans so I went back up to the cardio department and they rebound the wound with a proper bandage. I had then to walk through the centre of Leeds to the bus station with blood stains on my clothing. I'm just pleased there was no murder in Leeds that day or I would probably have been a prime suspect.
Eventually had the open heart surgery on 14th February - what better day for a heart op - and all went well.

Sorry to drivel on. Just my way of hoping all goes well for you tomorrow.

That's a coincidence, Peter, something very similar happened to me at LGI. I was wheeled in to the Catheter Lab - where they would have been performing your procedure - but before they could put me on the "table" to have stents inserted, they wheeled me out again to deal with a patient having a heart attack.

Oh I am not surprised really. My Dad had an aortic valve replacement op cancelled 3 times about 4 years ago, and each time they had travelled from King’s Lynn to Cambridge, and usually with an overnight stay in a local hotel the night before too.
I was originally told there was a possibility of last Friday, but at least they cancelled by phone before I left home then. Sigh.

Are you all writing a new version of Sirens or M.A.S.H here? Just call Patrick Dempsey and Hugh Laurie and they'll fix all of you! Next time instead of a bus to Cambridge or Lees may I suggest a one way ticket to Carfin?

I was actually thinking of going to the Vets nearby. They have a very good reputation for orthopaedics and no problem getting an appt. They do know how to charge, though

My thought but daren't! You'll find many recommandations about Super Vet on here. Mind you that one of my Yorkies had heavy surgery, her pelvis being broken in several parts. Instead of using screws to secure the Meccano plate my vet used a special glue and it worked wonderfully. Anyways, I can't recommend enough you change your body cream and use WD40 instead of it! Good to see you keep your sense of humor intact.

Operation not going ahead until Friday now. Annoying.
It will have been 3 weeks since the accident.
About going to the vets……

Had the “battle damage repair” operation on the shoulder on Thursday and discharged yesterday. In quite a lot of pain now and just on “ordinary painkillers” but such is life.
2 weeks to let the would heal, and then rehab starts properly. No driving for a fair few weeks and golf and motorsport likely to be off the agenda for at least 6 months.
Surgeon reckons I won’t ever get full range of movement back and getting out of the Caterham upwards through the roll cage might also be in doubt.
We shall see.
I knew there was a reason I had avoided bloody cycling for so many years!

Not really good news. As to the Cat may be I can suggest something, I did some endurance with a 1800 and remember that to get out of it with style is quite a challenge. Will let you know later. Are you allowed to fit a PAS on the Escort (car)?

Thanks Gerard. It’s very early days yet and I am hoping that the medics are being very conservative; we shall see in a few months and I will do my best with physio, but yes, I already have PAS on the Escort!

Andy, it certainly sounds as if you have done a real job on your shoulder, so I hope that your surgeons have done the same. I can't think of much I can do to help, but if you would like a few proper books to read I have a few I think you would enjoy, motor sport of course, also some DVD's to help pass the down time, very happy to send anything you want.

I guess your fall was just bad luck, I rode a bike for many years, and covered tens of thousands of miles, simply enjoying a ride, road racing, time trials, cyclo cross, plus a 50 mile round trip to work on a daily basis. I used the bike for commuting in all kinds of weather, icy Winter, wet Spring, sweltering Summer, and chilly Autumn, and while I would have had the occasional shunt, (like being knocked over by a driver pulling out of side road), the worst injury I suffered was a thorn under a finger nail, result of nose diving into the scenery during a cross race. I credit all those miles with my current good health.

The chain driving two of the eleven pinions may be? Or chain tensioneer? I seem to remeber that to adjust a Shimano derailleur you must follow the user's manual.

That's the equivalent of fitting a five speed gearbox with a four speed gear stick!

It's only in 6th gear but the change is at full stop.
