Looks cool, but then it says electric and I lose all interest.

It's perfect for a hillclimb where it's short range doesn't compromise it and neither does the altitude. Would be a complete beast.

I'm not for the super silent electric cars either, but it's a cool looking machine. If it achieves it's goal of besting the electric record at Pikes Peak I wonder if VW tries to expand on it's use. I hope it's not a one-off because it's seemingly a pretty big project. Lmp1 pilot Romain Dumas driving the thing too. It's also true that all-electric has a long way to go to do lmp1 speeds and distance.

I wouldn't be surprised if it beat the all time record at PP.

Besides, noise wise, we already had a period of factory cars running conventional diesels that sounded like boring silent vacuum cleaners, but it didn't kill of the show or take it away from those cars The only thing that really needs to happen before any bigger implementation (as in electric power being the primary source of power and not just add-in) is for the tech to catch up, and not to be gimmicky like in FE with glorified, slow, cheap spec cars and embarrassing chassis swaps after couple of laps of running because the battery tech is in the level of kindergarten still Last edited by Deleted; 20 Mar 2018 at 06:10. |

I think suv's will be popular for a long time here in the states. But the trendy thing is electrification. I don't see that going away but I do see it increasing.

Things are certainly moving that way, it's no coincidence we've lost two top tier manufacturer programmes to Formula E, it is now deemed more relevant.

F-E is cheap pr for these manufacturers. Much cheaper than f1 and probably lmp1. But it's a niche market in terms of racing, at least to the fans imo. I know that some media people try to play it up but it's not a big deal right now.

Formula E budget for a works-backed team is sub €20m. Some as low as €5-10m. Early budget caps were around €3m, but budget gaps are unenforceable.

It'll surely increase as soon as the rules are opened up a little more. Porsche and Audi are there so it's only a matter of time before their wallets are opened more. Then the same teams who are there because it's cheap will be gone and the cycle will repeat like it has in most forms of motorsport.

I'm in complete agreement. It's a timebomb before those budgets get out of hand at a record rate.

Maybe they will introduce BoP, because that always stops escalating costs!

This hasn't really got much to do with anything but found it interesting. On Jenson Button's youtube page, where he has new behind the scenes web series going on about his Super GT campaign, he's now in few of the videos talked about comparisons with GT500 to P1 and P2. Even in the most recent one released just couple of hours ago he - seemingly proudly - mentions of them being just four seconds slower than LMP1 at Fuji, which in turn he's somewhat described as F1 of sportscars
It's interesting of Honda personnel to look at these things... |

Do the rules allow a car manufacturer to make a non-hybrid customer car for privateers? I'm thinking if someone like Porsche wanted to modify the 919 for non-hybrid regulations and sell it.
