Great banter, you must have been a Hillclimber in the past! Yaris went to scrappage(with a goon pedal) and we bought an iQ! Strangely, this is not on the 'pedal surgery' list. I can't see the Lola body 'converting' to a 908 shape as the Porsche body is just fantasic in every view. The 908 shape is a late 60's and the Lola a late 80 and slab-sided like so many others of the age. IMHO they got a lot uglier in later years with the covered wheels (illegal in Hillclimbs I'm told) however, the fins and a small cord wing between that is adjustable with a good adjustable front splitter could be good. Advice on the front splitter is about 50mm protrusion, but the experts are out on if it should extend to the front bulkhead (givinf a 'floor' under the currently open parachute fron end. Any thoughts anyone? Been given the address of the cover lady who tailors a trailerable cover for cars. Saville Row style of fit. Hope to get the car back fron McClurg Motorsport Sat with a finished body to fit. Carbs next which I'm dreadding if it all goes ti~ts up Tempting still: |

there are some kit cars type bodies around
i saw in japan a 906 but it was centre seat position ppersonally i would opt for 908 the 917 is way too long for lola short wheel base!! |

Here is a great insight to the 906.
The key dimensions are bulkhead to each axle centre line and widths over axles. The fact the 906 is the same dimensionally is perfect, but the bulkhead is key. The 917 has a smaller wheelbase I thnk than the Lola, about 90''.The seating position of the 917 is way too far forward. Of all the bodies around, the 906 is the best so far. There are others, the Retoga bike engined car which I think is too small. The 904 is too long a wheel base. www.werkzcars.com |

Collected the Lola from McClurg Motorsport yesterday, chatted through the car with Sean who had a good time tweeking everything in to spec.
He has dialed-in an easy to drive chassis and has left me with a bit of homework to do as he found a few bits that need attention. The car sits quite differently on his flat platform, and certainly looks right. Dead chuffed with the result and at a good cost too! First time I've used Sean, and won't be the last either. Finished the body off when I got back, and with the paint dry I dropped the body on to check all is well this morning adding the flyscreen along the way. Quite a balancing act when heating it up to ease it to the template, but all is well, no stress cracks and I've used up all my number plate screws! The decorative corner is the minimum paint to cover all the wall damage sustained last year. Just maybe this body would look good as a '908 Martini' after all...... It is question time again!
The car is booked in for a RR session to sort the webers, rare/uncommon tripple choke webers. The car has been 'tuned' before by a Porsche specialist (a real one!) but it sounds awful at tick-over, all pops and bangs rivaling anti-lag on a good rally car... Suggestions this is down to idle jets being too weak. Any concurrence with this or other ideas? The noises are fast and furious and clear above 3 K rpm when the carbs are running on full circuit. They have been ultrasonically cleaned and a fresh repair kit fitted. Spindle wear is minimal. They have 37mm chokes in a 4mm carb. Fuel is simple Optimax, mechanical dizzy and Aldon Automotive electronic ign. not points. I welcome your educated thoughts! |

mate to me its a no brainer pay the money fit the kit map the ecu and then have peace of mind
someone else will give you what £1000 for the weber kit poss 1500? |

my porsche engined hillclimber
I thought it was about time i showed you my porsche engined hillclimber. As you all probably remember it is the car on Ebay last summer. Not found a great deal of info on the car yet other than what has been posted on Auto Diva and a few other links. On the following link go to 1985 group c and there is the car winning its class on the hillclimb. http://www.etl.lu/pages_secondaires/...sements_lw.htm The car appear to run an Air cooled 3.0L 911 motor the engine mounting was still on the chassis and you can see on the side pod the placement for the oil tank. It is using March suspension, but it is its own designed spaceframe chassis. The car is slowly coming back together and will be sporting the 3.2 boxster with 6 speed as shown in the above pic. OK its not original but have you seen how much a good 911 aircooled unit goes for! |

That is fantastic, and a very good engine/box choice I think.
The units are very strong and I think the Boxster uses a cable gear shift? Good to see another flat 6 car emerge, and I KNOW how much work you have before you! It will be magic when done. I would think the engine/box mounting points are not far away from the 3 litre 911 engine? Please keep us all upto date on your progress, and use lots of pictures! Slowly the Flat 6 Club will dominate the straight 4 pots. I have not been slacking. Car is up on stands again for a complete rework of the clutch slave arrangement. I needed to get the weight out of the system, so I've started again under there and using a stock 915 box clutch arm over the one that came with the car. This increases the leverage by about 20% but needs more pedal throw which I have. Yet to sit in the car to try it (and resist making any engine brummm brumm noises.) as I need ladders to get into it with it on stands. I still do not know why this Sach heavy duty 911 clutch needs so much throw to free it of the gears. I have a 1'' master and a 1'' AP slave, the 0.75 master could not give me the throw on the slave. This raises the pedal pressure and so you go round and round. It must be the lever ratio of the clutch pedal itself I think being vert different to the 911 weird pedal assembly. I am now at the end of the homework list from my visit to McClurg Motorsport. Sean asked me to check the brakes as he thought there could be a leak somewhere and the pedal a bit soft. He suggested placing the system under pressure by wedging the pedal down for 30 mins or so and if there is air/leak the brace used would go slack. It did. Found a leak in the OSR caliper/hose line to banjo joint. Nipped that up bloody tight and bled just that one side of the AP caliper. Repeated the test on the much harder pedal and it is as solid as a rock and a firm pedal to boot. I am planning to start the thing this afternoon..... My rolling Road appointment is looming, the Final Fronteer. I could be hillclimbing my 911 after all for the season start. Last edited by 911thillclimber; 28 Feb 2010 at 09:34. |

Of course with this little bloody car it did not start.
Driftwood's offer of £6K is looking attactive. Turns over a treat, 50 psi on the gauge, petrol is there but i think no sparks. Must have lost my way with the dash re-wire so an evening with the meter set to 'Bell'. Mate coming round tomorrow night to help sort as he is good at this 12V stuff, I hate it. Found this looking for a 911 picture for another web site. A Dulon with a 2 litre flat 6 911 engine/901 box at Silverstone just before I bought the Lola. I think it is the only one ever made. Looks V Nice to me. Wonder if he would take £6K.... |

You must know some expensive girls!
Checked all the ign loom last night with my meter and it is all there and connected. Hot wired the pump and primed the webers which took a while (well, 5 secondes before the pupm stopped clattering) and on the starter I have 50 psi after churning for 8 to 10 secs so all should be good for running tonight before the neighbours go to sleep. We shall see..... |

Well i have had and intresting couple of days after finding out my car should never of been sold. I was very kindly put in contact with the previous owner Mr Peter Aylett to discuss the bizarre set of events that lead to my purchasing the Mazuin Porsche.
I wont bore you all with details but the car should have never left Peters possesion. However after talking to Peter about the situation he has very graciously allowed me to retain the title and the remains of the Mazuin Porsche. I would just like to thank Peter Aylett again for such understanding and generosity and i hope we can do him proud resurrecting the Mazuin Porsche to its Winning ways. Next couple of days are going consist of starting to re fabricate the chassis, will pop some pictures up soon. I have got the electrics nightmare to come, i hope you you get her running tonight, next door will just have to learn to love the sound of a flat 6. Cheers Richard |

Well....
It runs! Very reluctant and we pulled the plugs and roasted them on the gas cooker and refitted pdq. Churned over and eventually got one cylinder going and shortly after all 6 chimed in. Sounds great, very mellow. After about 60 secs of wonderment one pot started to backfire with an impressive flame from one bank and that kept going semi-randomly. All others were clean. It was as last Sept, pop/bang so we killed the engine. Took the silencers off to see if that did anything at all. sures sounds good on open pipes, but still banging away with even more impressive flames! OK, it runs and will be on the rollers next wednesday. My Porche web mates tell me the idel is way too weak and that is an issue/ reason for this. Before the warmth got into the engine it was super smooth, really mellow and purred at tick-over. If only it would stay that way Checked the clutch and all clears and is nice and light too. Might pull the seat back 1/2'' and get more comfortable. Job for Sunday. |

You can't believe how many times I've thought about keeping it 'original' while i fooled about doing this car! Mike had a cracking Pinto on twin webers and 3 Mk678 boxes to choose from all with inboard discs or that killa FT200 that sat in the car with the Cossie turbo when i first saw the car in his mega garage. All sold off now. Things would have been so simple (in comparison) but the S2000 Historic Chapter would still throw the car out due to the Ghia days of modding the tub. Then there's the suspension.... I guess the whole car could still be 'back-dated' to S2000 trim but for a little more than a set of PMO's. I am however where I am. I just need the $ to the £ to move a bit to 2$ to the £ and I can get the carbs from the States and save £1000. Even Mrs Hillclimber bulked at a set of carbs, but i think that is the actual answer. Bad news for you is the value would rocket to infinity and way beyond with such a mod.. My friend (I still have some despite this car) is a fully qualified Clerk of the Course/ Scrutineer for Hillclimbs and 'scrutineered' the car for me last night and left me with a homework list as people are prone to do to me at home and work. He is not happy about the new dash tubing and a few other details, one being part of the Lola tub design, so that will have to stay. Let's hope Hi-Tech get to the root cause and the car will be as sweet as a nut and worth a fortune! |
