I love this picture, it is a still taken from my Fairthorpe Zeta GoPro footage, 2023 Le Mans Classic `Parade laps`. Dragging past a Mustang out of the 2nd chicane :-)

Any one know the history of the RS Escort below, it was taken at the recent MRL meeting at Silverstone. The car carries a Dagenham No plate NOO 922N but it does not feature in "The Works Escorts" by Graham Robson nor do I recall a Sunoco Racing Escort in period. I know lots of Escorts would have carried OO plates at the time so is this just a modern creation from a road car. I have seen the drivers name in Scottish entry lists but not in this car.

Looking at the DVLA site, I would say that it's a recreation from a donor green car made in 1974, but then first registered in August 1995. 5c was last issued in 2019.

I attended a Sunoco track day in 2010 at Silverstone, but there was no sign of your Escort. But;

Genuine question: all Boreham chassis were built as RHD? Even the rally ones campaigned in EU? I could test drive an ex-Roger Clark car and seem to remember it was LHD.

I stand to be corrected but I think that Clark originally drove a RHD version; it is possible that he later drove the other version. I also believe that production of all LHD Escorts started in Belgium before being transferred to a Ford plant in Germany. However, I'm not certain whether Boreham converted any RHD cars to LHD; possibly someone with far greater knowledge or who actually worked there would set the record straight. As for the car in question, as it wasn't registered until 1995, it is highly likely that under normal circumstances it wouldn't have an "OO" number which was available at the DVLA; weren't most of those cars in the "XOO" range, from memory. |

May be Clark had a special allowance and could chose the version he'd like to drive. For instance, FEV 8H was RHD (Monte Carlo'70) when FEV 5H was LHD. I don't think this is really important now. http://www.pilotos-muertos.com/2016/ClarkRoger.html https://www.facebook.com/classicford...2570989109690/
I can't ind the pictures of the car I road tested some years ago. |

When saying that Boreham built the cars, the shells would have been created elsewhere I would have thought; so Hailwood for RHD and Belgium/Germany for the LHD. There were significant differences between the two types apart from where the steering wheel was situated.

Also bear in mind that the RS2000 in Group 1 was never really successful, being outgunned by the Triumph Dolomite in 1973 to 1974. (Just scanned Robson's "Ford in Touring Car Racing").
Looking at the late Peter De Jong's website I've found entries for Mk1 RS 2000s at Silverstone May 1974 - London Sportscar Centre Ford Escort Mk.I RS 2000 Alan Foster, GB; Brands Hatch July 1974 Allen of Romford Ford Escort Mk.I RS 2000 Allan Wilkinson, GB; Ingliston August 1974 (Class Winner) London Sportscar Centre Ford Escort Mk.I RS 2000 Tom Walkinshaw, GB and Ford Escort Mk.I RS 2000 Gordon Dawkins, GB; Brands Hatch August 1974 London Sportscar Centre Ford Escort Mk.I RS 2000 Tom Walkinshaw, GB (DNF); and, Brands Hatch October 1974 Ford Escort Mk.I RS 2000 Alan Foster, GB. RS2000s made a few appearences in 1975 but were generally beaten by Avengers, Dolomites and anything else you could name. Just not very competitive. Looking at the entries it would seem that as far as the BSCC is concerned, the cars were priveteers not works entries. |

Viva will know better than I of course, but re the East African Safari 1972 I think five Escorts were made at Boreham all LHD including Hannu Mikkola/ Gunnar Palm's winner RWC 455K of course. Will be happy to be corrected.
The homologation form of the Mk1 RS2000 was "comfortable" (inspired from the X-Pack) but as stated by Peter above, nothing to see with the Dolomite which was impossible to outperform. |
