It would be a pretty interesting scenario if they could manage to get the Vauxhall's & Seats from the UK go up against the leading STCC entries...would many other national championship entries be in with a shout?

So why WTCC drivers can't compete? Is this because they would be disappointed, if they loose, or to give a chance to others?

Unbelievable. 44 drivers in 10 different brands (11 if you count Opel and Vauxhall as 2) and 4 different tyremanufacturers.

Well, with todays championships that would be possible again as well. Except for the 4 tiremanufacturers then, I can only get up to 3 on that one? Michelin, Dunlop and Yokohama?

In theory it is possible to have a 70-car grid, but that is wildly overambitious. Today's commercial rules seem to prescribe 1 standard tire. The reason is offcourse equality, but it restricts sponsoropportunity and competition imo. If you really want equality per sé, you must race spec cars or a one-makeserie.

Anyway, let's see:
BTCC: BMW, Vauxhall/Opel, Honda, Seat, Chevrolet (5)
STCC ads: Volvo, Peugeot, Audi, Mercedes (4)
Procar ads: Toyota (1)
FTCC ads: Skoda (1)

And there might be a Lada in the Russian series? That would make 11 or 12. Would be nice to see them all.

In a todays what if list, we could add SAAB as well. The car exists, even if it hasnt actually participated in a race yet. And Ford looks to be appearing as well.

And wasn't there a S2000 spec Golf GTI running in Finland as well? Add to that the different models (Procar Opel Astra, BTCC Vauxhall Vectra, DTC Peugeot 407, STCC Peugeot 308).

Inspired by this conversation I've started a little list with all S2000 cars built so far. You can find it here: http://tentenths.com/forum/showthread.php?t=111513

Drivers from the WTCC are not allowed in the European Championship, so I only counted the brands that race in national championships.

But this year weren't the Lada's a privateer effort? And next year isn't there going to be a Works and Privateer team running Lada's?

As I understand it, WTCC Privateers can enter the ETCup.

Exactly, Ladas could have raced in Salzburg this year. And we'll see, what 2009 season will bring...

Why did the Peugeot 405 mi16 go so well at Monza and in the French super touring championship in the hands of the French, and Average (to poor) in the BTCC , even with decent drivers like Rob Gravett ?? , was it budget ?? as the car obviously had potential >>>

I was wondering the same when it comes to Peugeot 406 in BTCC and STW. In BTCC the cars were not near the podium, but in STW it won 1 title with Aiello and was a regular frontrunner '97-'98 under the same regulations. A bit off-topic, but still...

The STW and BTCC Peugeot 406s were two completely different cars. The STW ones were built in-house by Peugeot Sport France, the BTCC ones by MSD. For reasons best known to themselves, Peugeot Sport refused to supply cars or engines to anyone else and that included Peugeot UK.

Part of the difference would have been down to aero-kits, as we know from Vauxhall/Opel what works in Germany doesn't always work on UK tracks, but there was also said to be significant differences in engine and chassis development.

Sounds like madness ...as we know BTCC was the best championship in the world , with so many manufacturers throwing their weight behind it , so for Peugeot sport to support another series is beyond me ...
