Sounds like it could be one of the ones mentioned in my late Dad's advert. If you look at the engine number it should have GMR somewhere and I think the chassis number might too. Have you got any pictures of what the car looks like now? Would be great to see. |

I will sort it out, and take some detailed pictures from the car. I bought it in 1983 from John Raden, and he Bought it, in 1982 from Arne Riis.( Apologize my poor english) Best regard Carsten from Copenhagen DK |

Excellent can we have a pic of it as it looks today Carsten?
IIRC there was 2 or 3 Dolly's out in 81/82 for Hamish Irvine, Terry Nightingale and the Riis car is that right? |

There's a white/blue striped Sprint racing in historic motorsport in Denmark at the time. Is this your car? Jesper |

As you can see, Arne Riis- John Raden- and me. I bought it 1983 from Raden. John Nielsens car is the other car there come to Denmark from UK, and he sold it to Kim Stenberg. ( I bought all the spare parts from John Nielsen ) I was mechanic for Arne Riis when he drove the Dolly. The white/blue car in historic racing is not mine, mine is under restoration. Carsten |

Hi Martin,
Interesting that you said you sold the other Dolly to Finland. I found one there some years ago . The owner said he thought it was Gerry he bought the car from, said he drove to England to collect it. It has a Don Moore engine still. The man in Finland who bought the car was called Urpiala Ring any bells ? Alex |

Martin - Was Tony's Dolly not Dad's old Dolly? Definitely the same colour schemes and I'm sure Dad said he sold his to Tony.

Not quite BTCC standard, but two Dolomites that raced in the ATCC & at Bathurst are Here and Here Too..

Dolly Sprint in Finland
I know it`s been a while, but I just found this picture of the ex GMR (?) Dolly Sprint that went to Finland. The picture shows it ice-racing I would gess in the 1990`s.

I would love to hear any more developments on this story as it unfolds.
I acquired an original Gp 1 Dolly a couple of years ago, but this is a Belgian LHD car. I think this is the one that Terry alluded to as "you know who" owning earlier in this thread. It is one of the four Dolomite Sprints that were entered at Spa 24 hour in 1974. One of the other Dolomites in that event was a RHD Broadspeed car driven by Rouse/Dron under the Butch Tailor colours that came 5th. I would love to know where that car went in the end, if it got rolled into a ball or was developed into something further. My car, also originally in Butch Tailor colours was driven by J. Vernaeve and failed to finish the Spa 24 hours in 1974. However it was campaigned successfully in various Belgian touring car events and then again throughout 1975 including Spa 24 hours again, but unfortunately failing once more. The car was then shipped back to the UK at the end of 75, rebuilt with a Don Moore engine which it still has (motorsport block (never seen one before or since), in Don Moore's distinctive metallic blue). It was also painted into Leyland works livery (in which it remains today) and it was raced by Vernaeve, Metge, Pirenne, Pond through to 1979 in a large number of touring car events being sponsored by Leyland Cars Belgium. Unfortunately I don't believe the car ever came to the UK to be raced, which is a shame but I would love to know if anybody knew of the car or worked on it when it was rebuilt in the UK in the winter of 1975/76 with Don Moore. As for today, the car remains largely unchanged since then, although I have mechanically restored the car, painted the interior and brought it up to modern safety spec. It is now set to debut in the UK next year after having been raced for the first time at Spa in over 30 years in the summer just gone. Would love to hear more on where some of the original cars are just to compare notes, but equally it seems there is some effort now being made to resurrect the original Gp 1 cars to race and it would be great to see more of them coming out of their hiding places. Here's a pic at Spa 6hr 2011: |

Lovely looking original car Ant!
I take it you're entering next July! Out of interest how does it compare on track to the presumably cheaper and less correct replicas that are often out in force? |

Based upon my observations, it is pretty much the same. Ant drove it for the first time at Spa and his times compared favourably with a replica driven by it long standing owner. More time to come but it seems to me that there is little difference. Don't forget that unlike the Escort Pinto, there has been very little development of the Dolomite engine.

I've looked at the Classic and have had some contact with JDog. Firstly it would appear to me that the Gp1 cars would only be there to make up the numbers to enable the more modern cars a place to play, but I wonder a) if any Gp1 cars will come out and b) where the original Gp1 cars are to come out?
Unfortunately only one or two Gp1 cars running at the back of the grid will neither provide spectacle of a race for a class win, but also they probably will spend most of their time trying to get out of the way. If there were 10 Gp1 cars however that would be a very different story. Secondly the cost is very expensive for a couple of sprint races as has been discussed elsewhere, but I do feel for the guys trying to organise this. With a grid of 54 cars the £30k cost becomes more reasonable however at a hoped 30 entries of very mixed cars it will be an expensive exercise for all involved. It's a difficult one for I would love to see a proper Gp1 revival and the devil on my shoulder keeps telling me that unless I, as a Gp1 owner, invest to get the car out at high brow events then how can I ever expect anything to happen... but what is a reasonable cost to invest? |

The engine is the greatest untapped resource and as it stands it hasn't seen the development over more recent years like the Pinto engine has. In 30 years it would appear that the developments have been to improve reliability and find an additional 20 - 25 bhp. The potential however is much much greater than that. We are tinkering with a few ideas to free up some additional power from the 16v head but like all things development it is a matter of time, expense and experiment. I am confident however that we will find some improvements to help bring the Dolomite towards the front of the Gp1 field once more... we just need to find more Gp1 cars to compete with. I will be out this year campaigning the car, yes its original, but it needs to be raced and put in the spotlight to encourage others to do the same! |

Here are two photos of the Vernaeve Dolomite (Leyland Belgium)... 1st one is when it sat in the museum at the Abbaye de Stavelot. The 2nd one is it being raced at Spa in 1976 with Vernaeve and Pirenne.
