Those who suggested Beverly isn't intelligent are clearly wide of the mark.
Seems very clever to me... |

Oh, she has intelligence. She just needs to employ it every so often.

She is employing it.
This book and the subsequent publicity is making her a hell of a lot of money. Sure, we don't like what she's saying, but that's neither here nor there. |

She's more along the lines of cunning and scheming than intelligent - typical woman in other words.
But fair play to her for cashing in on the right subject at the right time, I suppose. |

As anyone seen this week's Autocar magazine?
She doesn't come across well at all! |

She was on the radio today and came across very well. From what I have read of this thread, I suspect most of the males don't want thier little worlds threatened by any females who may be brighter than them. |

Well we pretty much can't say anything against her views then! I'd like to think my views aren't a reaction to being threatened, but you never can tell I've no real problem with Bev as such, although her features were a reason to only turn the telly on five minutes before a GP (not her fault as such). The book just isn't a big exposé on the world of F1.
Personally I'd just respect it if it came from someone who was an utmost professional in their job. If it was written by Louise Goodman, who has been involved in F1 for years in many different roles and has a real insight (more than just where DC's girlfriend shops) then it would probably be better. She says somethings that are undoubtedly true, although not a surprise. I dare say F1 can be a nasty place, but I bet it extends further than just being female. I reckon the real nastiness occurs between people who are properly involved in the sport. |

It's like the old saying goes - hell hath no fury like a talentless career-girl scorned.
I'd maybe agree with the men-feeling-threatened argument, only I'm not a disillusioned bit of skirt who seemingly thought they were being hired to talk philosophy to drivers of the Eddie Irvine ilk. If I was, I would probably feel quite threatened, yes. As Adam says - if Louise Goodman or someone like Ann Bradshaw wrote the book then fine. It's like the difference between whether you'll buy Murray Walker's or James Allen's 'Guide to being a top commentator.' |

Beverley freely admits she's not a racing fan.
That's no reason to call her "talentless". |

Well, she was a fantastic F1 TV presenter, admittedly.
Full of charisma - I just loved her Stowe Ball specials. |

The features she did on the F1 programme were what she was asked to do by the editor.

Well if she was that talented then she could've replaced Murray Walker.

I think we're going round in circles here.
She is a talented broadcaster, but she has no interest in racing, therefore she would not be the right person to replace Murray. Not that James was either, though! |

Formula one is a male dominated environment (rightly or wrongly), some women complain about that whilst others use it to their advantage. In my view she was very naive going into the job with no background interest or knowledge (you do have to question why ITV hired her as well). Very similar situation really to Lee McKenzie on speed sunday - no subject matter knowledge or interest and therefore came across really badly. |

ITV deliberately wanted someone without a racing background or racing knowledge to do the job they gave Beverley - she was specifically briefed to do reports on the glamour and social side of F1.

Absolutely right KB, but I've often wondered if these "lifestyle" slots on any of the televised events (not just F1) actually appeal to anyone. For me they are an irritation and just another reason to either tune in late or watch and fast-forward on the video. I find them especially irritating when they take up so much time on shorter (say 30minute) programs when all I really want to see is the racing action.
Obviously the idea behind them is to reach out to a wider audience, but I'm guessing that the wider audience they are after won't be tuning in to motor racing anyway. Last edited by neil_davidson2; 23 Jul 2004 at 16:26. |
