Well, only Ferrari showed up to Max's meeting today... Maybe the rift between Ferrari/F1 and the rest of the teams is worse than I thought.

a salary cap would only benefit the teams that can afford to actually pay drivers in the first place.

Why not just limit the personnel.
Each team can only have 40 staff on the books. Includning test drivers, drivers, pit crew, designers, etc.. Teams that make there own engines are allowed 60 staff (Ferrari Toyota) I dont think you need 200-300 staff to run an F1 team. I think this is the area where we have gone out of budget. |

If you limited the personell everyone would start using "outside consultants" to do a lot of the work they do themselves just now.
Set up an off the shelf company, transfer some of your staff to it, and then contract that firm to do work for you. |

I understand what he means by that, but it still stinks that a meeting should be allowed to go ahead when only one team turns up. It's getting quite silly really. |

What Max meant was that Ferrari were more open with ideas than they would have been had other teams been present.
All the teams were notified of the meeting, all were told by Max it was important to turn up. If nine teams can meet Bernie on their own, there's no problem surely with one team meeting Max on their own. But in any case, while it's all interesting soap-opera just now, everything will be fine in the end, because everyone involved wants the same outcome really - the only quibbles are about how they're going to get there. |

I understand Max meant that KB. If the other teams were present they'd have just bickered and no opinions would have been offered.
But IMO, I think for a meeting to go ahead you should have more than one party expressing opinions! Four would be a good enough number. Because let's face it, a lot of people will look at a meeting between Max and Ferrari quite badly, no matter how constructive it was! |

A certain tyre retail outlet owner said recently, that the best meetings to have are when 2 people are invited, and one of them doesn't show up.

I think this salary cap idea is a very smart move by Max and Mr E. We must remember that most of the teams in F1 are owned or partly owned by a selection of manufactures in the car industry. This whole idea behind cutting costs would be very attractive to them and might make them look at putting pen to paper and joining Ferrari and signing up to F1 till 2012. If the manufactures got a sniff of cutting there budget by x amount of £MILLION$ then I think they would jump at it. It may be motor SPORT but its also a business and if it does'nt make financial sence then the manufactures will walk away

If you have plenty of time on your hands, take a look at www.fia.com for a full chronology of correspondence between Max Mosley and the teams on cost-cutting. Makes for some interesting reading. By the way, Renault suggested both salary caps and the age limit.

I humbly apologize to Max, and ask the moderators that this thread be renamed:
Renault's ideas for 2008- are they insane? To reflect the fact that it was not Max, but Renault that made the silly suggestions. |

There were quite a few "silly" suggestions made by Renault,Williams and Ferrari, but on the other hand a few good ones too.

This of capping driver salaries only would make greater Michael Schumacher, who would be the last great driver before F1 turns up to a team championship more to a driver championsip.
I prefer that FIA will make a team budget money limit instead, where € 250,000,000 is the top limit to spend. That REALLY would be a handicap, and will help to make F1 more affordable. And of course reduce or scrap that elitist U$S 48,000,000 inscription fee (For me is very strange when Olympics, World Soccer and Tennis are increasing their number of entrants at their main championships, Formula One tends to shrink them. Is F1 a mirror of the social exclusion of the world???). Last edited by Mekola; 2 Feb 2005 at 21:48. |
