Conspiracy! I knew Dick Johnson was driving a Commodore in '81!

You said it won in 1981.

Just correcting you in the nicest way.

I don't think he did. i think he said the car that won in 1980, also competed in those following years.

Camaroz, Ray Ellis tried to qualify in 1988 in a VL with Bruce Williams, but failed. Do you know if this is the same car or was it a new VL shell?

The VL was a new shall after they tried to convert the VB/C/H/K to VL. The new shell (Holden Motor Sport) used bits out of the VK. The VL was later sold to Paul Trevethan then someone else, then someone in Darwin (Darwin again!) and is now apparently in the north coast of NSW. Yellow/Blue?

Sorry forgot the Quote!!! refer below.

Sorry Chatters, can't find reference to "won in 1981"!

Corrections are no problem with me, it was 25+ years ago after all.

Cheers.

Does anyone have any record of how many starts the "Fred Sutherland" (spelling) Studebaker made at Bathurst?

Yes, it was yellow/blue. Paul Trevethan ran it in 1990 with Andrew McDowell.

Out of curiosity, who owned it in 1982? Was it perhaps a MHDT test mule during that year?

MHDT still owned it in 1982. Story goes it was "for sale" for the right money (a lot). Testing in the period was always with the current car (Chassis #3)but #2 was always in the shop. During the later stages of the 1982 ATCC, Chassis #4 was well underway (debut at Sandown Enduro) and "old #2" dropped in price. As it turned out, both #2 and #3 Chassis were sold/delivered in early February 1983 to their new owners at Calder Park, #2 to Keogh, #3 to Lusty's.

The Blue/yellow Trevethan VL is now owned by Mark Taylor. I was chatting with him last Sunday while i was looking at the car. He bought it from a bloke in Darwin, it was complete and mostly original, but very worn out. He has completely restored it to how it was when Paul Trevathan raced it at Bathurst. He said it has done 4 Bathursts, each in a different set of hands and has had several different liveries.

Great stuff, thanks for the info. Did the Lusty's run much in '83, i only remembered them on the scene from 1984?

I'm pretty sure 'The Moffs' Cenovis Falcon was a six time starter from 93 until the 98 accident in the hands of Mr Heath ( In EL Specs ). Also the 93 Bathurst winning Commodore, went up until 98 ( then in VS Specs ) when Mark Poole decided to upgrade for the next year. Come to think of it, theres been quite a few 6 time starters.

The ex Ron Dickson Camaro went for about 6 as well (79-84 ?)

What about Terry Finnigans Foodtown Commodore. Built 91 and was still at Bathurst in 1997, maybe even further.

If you count the Fujitsu series races as well the Beikoff car has a fair few Bathurst 'race' starts.

As noted earlier in the thread, the Finnigan VN/VP/VR did 7 Bathursts, for 3 owners.

The Moffat EB would have done 5..it didn't do the 1997 race.

The Dickson Camaro would be a 6 time starter as well, under 3 owners. The Bartlett Camaro would be a 5 time starter, missing the 1983 race.

I think you might be right about the Perkins/Poole VP/VS..it would be 6 starts for this car.

Don't think the Beikoff AU has done any Bathursts..it was the ex Bastian car as I recall.

PE017 has made 6 starts, Perkins 93, Trimble 94, Poole 95-98.

The Beikhoff car is the car John McLean built for Rod Salmon in 2000, it started at Bathurst in 00 & 01.

To add another slant what were the oldest cars to make a start in the 1000 (at least in the V8 era), I think these would be:

Richard Mork’s 2000 VS that had been built by Bob Forbes Racing at the end of 1990

Chris Butler’s 2000 VS that had been built by Terry Finnigan at the beginning of 1991

Terry Wyhoon’s 2000 VS that had been built by HRT in 1991

Tim Rowse’s 1999 VS that had been built by Perkins Engineering for Bob Pearson at the beginning of 1991

Rod Salmon’s 1999 VS that had been built by Perkins Engineering for Peter Brock at the beginning of 1991

Bill Attard’s 2001 VS that had been built by Gibson Motorsport at the beginning of 1993

The closest we would get to that in more modern times would be HRT#42, built as a VT by HRT in 1999 and run at Bathurst that year by Lowndes/McConville and which last ran at Bathurst in the hands of Murphy/McConville ( for PWR) in 2006).

Attards VS was at Bathurst in 2001 but didn't get a start ( it ran the Konica race instead) so can't count that year but still an impresive record for the car.

Does Chris Heye'rs VW Golf come close? He debuted the car in 1976, and it I'm sure it ran until around until 1981-82.

The Bob Person VN from 91 (PE011)was only updated to VP, Rowse ran it as a VP, and then striped it, thats how Rowse sold it, and put the parts from the VP into another Perkins shell, ex castrol car i understand

Hi David,

My car is still going through the process with CAMS. The "other car" is now in Qld but to my knowledge no-one has seen it yet.

Cheers.

In Qld, so I suppose its either having a champion experience or being Bowed & owned. Anyway good luck with yours, it looks magnificent. If it is the Bathurst winner does that make the other car the proto mule car built by John Sheppard & raced by Moff at Sandown ?

Cheers David
