Labelling him is unfair - these are the perils of the Dakar

Look, we've labelled Gordon, now it's McRae's turn. By the end of the Rally, we'll probably have labelled Loprais as well.

..ewgh, that's an ugly smiley - let's take a nicer one: - there.

Not yet, still a VW in the overall lead with Saby. Peterhansel, possibly the biggest threat, is still down in 5th.
And, as I was saying in the chat room at the start of the rally (which certain people dismissed, didn't they cy ), you can't rule out BMW - and with AL Attiyah in fourth I can see them doing better than expected!

Worst news today though - the 2CV is out

Yes now the Mitsus are completely unchallenged aren't they!

No I'm still not counting the BMWs "in" among the immediate challengers for victory. A lot of bad luck will have to befall the other frontrunners, with a trouble free run for X-Raid. What are the odds for that?

Inexperience?
How can that be?
Somebody just told us 2 days ago that Gordon has more than 15 years experience in desert racing ...

He can have experience in American Bajas, but didn´t know Dakar and African desert.

Only three more cars needs bad luck and Al Attiyah would be in the lead. Remember, this is the Dakar - stranger things have happened! You are right, there's more chance of Peterhansel coming up and taking the lead than the BMW, but under no circumstance would I ever count BMW out!

Meanwhile today - weather looks bad: wind, sandstorms, and apparantly it has just rained a little too!
Coma leads at CP1 in the bikes meanwhile, all very close at the minute though

I'm not counting them out - just not counting them in either

Besides, someone else is intent to charge back up the order - on his website www.robbygordon.com Robby G. says "This race is still not over. There are ten stages left and if we can gain a half hour every stage we can still show well." - can he do it?

Stage 8 Newsflash

Quote:
From www.dakar.com
Due to the very difficult weather conditions during stage 7 between Zouerat and Tichit in Mauritania that forced seven of the nine race helicopters to remain grounded at CP2 (km 397), the following decisions have been taken by the organisation:

Tonight's briefing at 21h00 is cancelled

The briefing will take place at 8h30 tomorrow morning

Stage 8 special between Tichit and Tidjikja will be shortened. It will now be 130kms long (the first 130kms of the normal stage). The remaining part will be covered as a liaison.

The first vehicles will take off later than planned for tomorrow's stage.
The first bike will start at 10h and the first car at 12h30
Other news updates - bad news for former winners Vladimir Tchaguine (trucks) who stopped out in the stage today with "serious mechanical worries."; Jean-Louis Schlesser who is also out in the desert with mechanical gremlins; and Kenjiro Shinozuka, the 1997 winner, who flipped out 120km into the stage. Both Kenjiro and co-driver Pascal Maimon were airlifted to hospital, Maimon complaining of back pains - hopefully it's nothing serious.

Peterhansel won the cars today comfortably ahead of Nasser At Attiyah in the BMW. Fretigne won the bikes just ahead of Coma, who took the overall lead.

A stage too far?

Today's stage has now been totally cancelled with still around half the field stuck in the desert in stage 7.
Everyone know's the Dakar is tough - we expect it to be tough. But, was yesterday's stage too much? It decimated the field, and spread the results out by so far it seriously limited who we can expect to see to win. Plus, it's dangerous - there are concerns that the people still out there will run out of fuel.
Should we stop having stages quite so tough in the future?

Rest at Atar

Rest day today after the tribulations after the last few days.

How things look half way through?:
Cars - has to be Peterhansels to lose and Alphand's/Klienschmit's to win. That said, anything can happen as always - Stephane with potential engine problems at the end of yesterday, probably will be fixed today. Sousa down in 4th is over 2h30 off the lead - it'll require a miracle for him to win now. 84 cars are still officially running.
Bikes - Very close! Penalties affected the leaderboard after yesterday, and with the top 8 seperated by less than 20 minutes anyone of them could win it. Can't rule out Sala yet in 9th at 45minutes behind. If had to chose anyone I'd pick Meoni at the minute, but I wouldn't put money on it! 120 bikes are left in it.
Trucks - after Tchaguin's problems, Kabirov is well in the plumb seat by over 1h30 from Hans Bekx. That said, he didn't do too well yesterday, and one small problem could make it interesting again! 44 trucks remain.

Surprising. Before Dakar I voted for Tchaguin and father and son De Rooij. I hope Bekx (is doying very well) can make it Kabirov ver difficult in the last week of the rally.
