Now there is a name that brings back very happy memories from my racing days. At that time, Tim was racing a Clubmans car, possibly a Lotus 7 or maybe a Mallock U2, and we very often raced at the same meetings. To help fund my expensive hobby, I worked part time in the evenings at a bistro and I was friends with most of the other staff including the young lady who managed the coffee bar upstairs, and she just happened to be Tim's girlfriend and then to become his wife.

So when us lads raced on the same programme, she would always come over and make sure that my car was absolutely spotless and polished, plus would always ensure that both bonnet and boot were securely fastened, and my seat belts were as tight as possible; a real talisman.

I don't think that Tim still races, however he is, or certainly was fairly recently, one of the instructors at Silverstone which I found out when I contacted him a couple of years ago.

The late Barry Reece - Special Saloon Mini 850.
(Photos: Chris Higginbotham)

"Barry Reece started his racing career in 1969. He raced for many years a Mini 850 Special Saloon car, and obtained over 50 class or outright wins in regional events near his South Wales. Successes included several class wins in the BRSCC South-Western Championships as well as two Welsh 850 Championships at Llandow. 1980 marked his best season, driving a Maguire Mini, Reece won the BARC Wendy Wools 1000 Special Saloon Car Championship outright and also took his class once again in the BRSCC South-Western series at Castle Combe. In 1981 he scored 14 Special Saloon wins, using an engine built up by himself and his brother Phil Reece as mechanic, then he passed to the Maguire "Stiletto" 850. In 1982 he was the winner of the Wendy Wools 1000 Special Saloon Championship driving the Isis-Forklifts Maguire 850 Californian Hartwell."

Mini Special Saloon Car race at Brands Hatch for the 'Driving Ambition' TV series in 1984.
Peter Baldwin was the 'real' driver of his own race Mini. Other drivers include Ginger Marshall and David Enderby.
