I hope Audi is doing serious development on next year's car, as their current car is wayy behind the other two cars. Is it the engine that's holding them back?

Porsche still use up the tire too fast looking at those gaps, but theyll take pole with the 41.8 mixed in.

The drop between the first and second drivers times was quite dramatic in this session. Do tires wear that quickly at Bahrain?

Another reason why Audi were more reluctant to use two different methods of recovery is the fact that diesel engines are heavier than petrol ones. Add another hybrid system on top, and they'd struggle to make the minimum weight, or certainly not have as much ballast to play with. So in that regard, you could say the engine is holding them back. |

The #12 Rebellion is closer to the Audi's pace than the Audi was to the pole-sitter.

Same thing that happened when they raced Peugeot - losing out on sheer speed and it's causing mistakes to be made, be they in driving, development, production, etc.
Yes I know, ERS incentive, petrol/diesel balance, floor/aero flex clarification - those are surely taking their toll, but even when they weren't factors Audi were rarely the fastest factory car. But because they bring their Sunday best to Le Mans (and like it or not, Le Mans is the pinnacle of sportscars) it's easy to misremember Audi as always being quick on track. |

Probably won't be up for this one. I've been sick most of this week, I'm pretty tired, too, and it's just miserable weather-wise where I'm at.
I'll just eat my Cesar chicken pasta salad, look up some stuff online, and go to bed in a couple hours or so. |

Given the big weight disadvantage of a diesel engine, weight is a crucial criterium for the energy storage system.

Maybe then they could go for 4/6 MJ, or else i think they will not have a chance against Porsche and Toyota. I think Toyota would stay (next year) with 6 MJ Because the V8 engine is heavy compared to the Porsche V4 who i believe will go for 8MJ next year, and if they solve their reliability issues, they are the main contenders. |

How much less power would they get from a smaller engine? How big would the weight reduction be? Enough for them to be able to use a bigger hybrid system? Would the additional hybrid power be enough to offset the decreased power of the ICE? Or is diesel just the fundamentally wrong solution with these regs? I dont know.

Toyotas v8 is around 100kg. Its probably not much difference to Porsches engine. Mazda's diesel is ~143kg, so theyre lighter than Audi but not by a margin like Toyota.
As for this race, vipbox has a few links for a stream. I assume its motors tv. |

They do not need a smaller diesel engine, the current one can be lightened considerably by using more exotic materials(they only use cast iron and aluminium to insure it's applicable to road car use, but should they want less engine weight, they can change that approach)
Audi's new road car V6 diesel weighs only 6 kg more than their V6 petrol, so it's very much doable. |
