As a side note, I thought we had a glorious period of sports car racing in the late 90's without any championship and without some of the cornerstone races even. Porsche, Toyota, Nissan, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, the McLarens, and so forth. Some of those entries competed for championships, but not all. Yeah, that period busted too, but so did the glorious period in the early 1990s with two previously "strong" championships. So, in other words, I don't think this championship guarantees anything, but the potential for success appears to be there. It just seems to me that the FiaACO are building some cracks into the ship they are trying to build here.
The mid-'90's were exciting with the F1 GTR's, F40's and such, but by early '97 it was clear this class of racing only had a couple of years to run, there was a split between FIA/ACO rules (GT-ONE etc. weren't allowed in FIA GT), and by the time the FIA Prototype Championship was proposed for '99, most had left for F1 or the ALMS.

Oh, Peter's firing of their ACO "partners" makes a lot of sense when you consider that it is rumored that the ACO did not even let the ALMS know about the Petit date conflict until it was announced. What a partner. It's nice to see that Patrick Peter does not suffer from Battered Wife Syndrome.
The LMS remains affiliated with the ACO, LMS teams will also be given priority for remaining places at WEC races. The ALMS has the same options as the LMS, it's the ALMS who chose to restrict GTC to one make, they chose to leave their LMP classes as is, they have double the rounds of it's Euro equivalent and very different goals, they are just so very different.

Even if PLM was on the WEC schedule there'd be twelve months discussing which teams will be turned away, with more entries expected than this year, it would be more than just LMPC's and GTC's not competing, something Peter didn't want to do in his series. When it comes down to it, there are too many cars to have joint events at most circuits, if the ALMS had literally a handful more quality season long LMP entries, WEC teams wouldn't be missed.

This is why the suggestion that the ALMS should wait to finalize their schedule after the WEC schedule is released so silly.

Anyway, we'll see. There's still a good possibility that LMS GTE-Pro will be better or just as good as WEC GT-P. We'll have to see what the Porsche teams decide and if AF Corse or whoever decide to field an LMS -Pro team. LMP2 is to be seen. Boutsen, TDS, and company may stay in the LMS, but maybe they are considering WEC options as well. The biggest problem with LMS (LMP2 in particular) is that it will be virtually impossible to get a guaranteed Le Mans entry in the LMS.

Didn't Boutsen get a pair of McLarens? Not sure how that would affect the LMP2 program.

the oreca 03 used by boutsen this year is the same chassis that team oreca matmut used to run at le mans, so there is a concrete possibility that their oreca 03 has never been "their" but was just in leasing.

Schedule is now out, better late than never.

March 9-10 - Paul Ricard Test (France)
April 1 - Six Hours of Le Castellet (France)
May 20 - Six Hours of Zolder (Belgium)
July 15 - Six Hours of Donington (UK)
Sept 9 - Six Hours of Brno (Czech Republic)
Nov. 4 - Six Hours of Portimao (Portugal) TBC

Not 100% convinced by the timing of the Zolder round - is it good or bad to have that much proximity to Spa WEC?

Three doses of big league sports car racing in 2012?! I can't bloody wait, GT1/GT3 at Silverstone, LMS at Donington and WEC at Silverstone. 2012 is going to be a most excellent year of spectating for myself.

I like the choice of Zolder but they also forgot Nurburgring 24 is that weekend.

i don't know how much good can be brno for these kind of races (i admit that i've never loved that track, so this can influence my opinion). The other tracks are good (even if donington hasn't anymore the dunlop bridge ... ) but the decision of LMS CEO to don't let WEC take parts in their events, i don't know how much will be good for this championship....

Interesting to note. Series is named European Le Mans Series in the official communication. Used to be just Le Mans Series.

It's like PP is making an extra effort to say "it's just a regional series, look, we're not competing with WEC at all."

Kind of makes sense, since there's the ALMS and ELMS.

LMS is THE Le Mans Series - it does not need any additional adjectives in the name

Kaneko has raised his head again , for 2012 his team will race a OAK/Pescarolo/Nissan in the LMS .

http://www.endurance-info.com/versio...ance-8900.html

Excellant choice . Be interesting to see what that can do with argueably the best engine in P2 ..... dont know what drivers he has planned though .

FLM with the title, Pegasus has received an invitation to act in LMP2 for the next 24 Hours of Le Mans? Are you going to accept it and with what equipment?

"Yes, of course, we accept and we are very happy we will be at Le Mans in 2012. I am very happy to return to Le Mans after a first experience in 2010. We are working on the LMP2 to run with a 03-ORECA Nissan. A ORECA, because it's been some time since we work with them and it goes well. The Nissan engine, because in 2011 it has been proven and that it was above the lot. "

Outside of Le Mans, what is the program, the WEC Le Mans Series, VdeV?

"In fact, we are working on two projects with different partners. This will be the Endurance World Championship Le Mans with single-, or Le Mans Series LMP2-and with a FLM-and VdeV. The World Championship of Endurance, it is very tempting, because they are beautiful circuits, although I regret the absence of the Petit Le Mans and if the end of the season is a bit complicated with trips every two weeks, but it is a World Championship. We should know more soon. What is good this year, we had very early the confidence to do the 24 Hours in 2012 and for partners and sponsors, this facilitated discussion. We were able to start working early. "

looks like a step up to lmp2 ranks with an oreca-nissan either in LMS or WEC. "sadly", flm project is still going

So how many potential P2s / FLM cars will there be next year? Has anyone put a list of potential / confirmed runners together ? I think this could be a good series, but only if there are a good number of prototypes. I'd rather not see 80% of the field as GT cars, as there are plenty of other series where i can see those, its the prototypes that will ensure the series success IMHO.

I believe Pegasus hoped to run a Courage LC75-HPD LMP2 in the LMS in 2011, but the funding didn't arrive for that package to run.

Anyway, the LMS name is no more. European Le Mans Series is the new name apparently. Let's hope the 2012 version of the ELMS turns out better than the 2001 version.
