We've also had the Luxembourg GP in Germany before. So it's not unheard of to have a race named after a nearby location.
I don't think the FIA are interested in naming F1 races after cities though. Countries or continents only. |

After Watkins Glen and Long Beach, however, the US race has had a history of being named after the city it's in, or the casino which parking lots the circuit made use of.
As for the circuit, it looks great for a temporary course, and pretty darn good compared to several of Tilke's permanent tracks even. As for temporary circuit events that F1 took to high profile not being around, Long Beach is still with us, and Detroit just won't die, so it's not exactly all bad on that front. And a Las Vegas street circuit may have to return if another open wheel series wants to run in that market going forward. Last edited by Purist; 28 Oct 2011 at 14:03. |

Where to stay??
So what do the locals recommend?
Where will party central be? I suppose the well heeled will go back to the Big Apple... Are there cheaper places to lodge where bullet-proof vests can be dispensed with? Paasaic? Hakensack? Palisades Park? (all names familiar from numerous sitcoms) I see there is a Crab House by the water...and one of those pretend "Outback" places (I'm Australian OK!) Where will the Corner Workers hang out? |

Regarding the name, why not USGP East and USGP West, like days of yesteryear?

Those are all good questions that I might need answers to, because I'm trying to sort out how to get to 3 Grands Prix in the same year, I better start saving my nickes. |

Sorry if already mentioned but when Bernie said 'we need another 2' does he mean another 2 American races or did he mean 2 in that time zone?! Maybe we'll have USGP East, West, North and South! |

A lot of the infrastructure was already there, like the stadia. I don't know if Kyalami is up to hosting a race, or whether a new track would need to be built? Purist would know, he seems to be the resident track expert.

And Kyalami is definatly not up to standard. A lot of money would have to be pumped in to get it there to. |

Lol. Which begs the question who is going to finance it? Certainly not the South African government, they haven't got a bean and who ever does will have to fork out for Bernie's sanctioning fee, on top of the cost of refurbishing Kyalami or building a new track.

I heard about that too but a street race in Cape Town throws open the whole question of security, which was a problem during the World Cup.

Easy there. Yes, I've been to Kansas Speedway. I've also been to Heartland Park (Topeka), Hallett (Oklahoma), Road America, Mid Ohio, Watkins Glen, and Sebring. I was in the D.C. area in May, and took a look at the Baltimore GP section of downtown. I didn't get to go inside of Iowa Speedway (only the gift shop was open at the time), but I took a good look around the outside, and had a nice vantage point in from outside Turn 2.
The main push at the moment in South Africa seems to be this Cape Town street circuit. It's a 5.3km layout, but it looks to have an absurdly tight section inside a an actual stadium, several traffic circles, and uses multiple sections that look far too narrow (two lane roads, and the entry and exit of the stadium may only be one lane wide). |
