K - B, good point and nice to see you back on the boards.
As I noted earlier in this thread, there is a perception of "quality" in ChampCar based strictly on it's "salad days" as CART. Bourdais is definitely a man among boys right now, so we know he is good, but the low level of competition there prevents us from having an idea of [I]how[I]good he is. |

Too bad that Frank Williams & Co are seemingly the only ones brave enough to gamble on unproven quantities, otherwise Bourdais and several others would have gotten their chance to shine in F1 already.

I've held something of a grudge against Bourdais since he tried to kill Martin Short in the 2004 Le Mans. For me, that kind of recklessness has no place in F1 ...

Well he's quick no doubt about it, but with the resurgence of Frenchman in GP2/WSR 3.5 etc I feel that he's going to miss out now.
Not surer about Premat but I would say that Lapierre, Perera (through Toyota) and maybe Gommendy (he is gonna throw off that daft underrated tag this year I reckon) stand an evens chance of getting at least an F1 test before too long? |

But at he end, if he finishes his career in US Cart, he will be a here there. Better than driving around in F1 without a chance of winning. That is what I think.

It's a shame but being a formula 1 Driver is more than just being able to drive fast. SB may be lacking some serious qualities that F1 teams are looking for. Maybe the same reason why Ant is a test driver and not an F1 driver. Unfortunately the "OK Magazine" world we live in!

About Le Mans, performance in endurance racing is hardly fair to say if someone should be in F1 or not.

Garcon isn't referring to his performance, more a dodgy move....
It was a hideous move he pulled and a very hefty shunt for Martin Short.....however, there are folk in F1 (ndeed, all categories) who have done similarly silly moves perhaps. And I wouldn't say he's beating nobody of note in Champcar....yes, it isn't exactly the class of 1999, however there are still some strong drivers in that series. |

Actually I've changed my mind. Reckless moves and complete arrogance afterwards. He's JPM and Villeneuve rolled into one - absolutely perfect for F1!

I thought that until I had a proper look at the entry list for this year - and I can't really see it. |

I think up front there are four or five very good drivers who are hard to beat.
However, I have to say, there is a void after that. |

No doubt looking at an entry list and every year it seems to look a little worse as there are many unproven unknown names, but they are dark horses and the rookies were quite impressive at Long Beach and I don't think the field is that bad compared to 2005 which was quite pleasent and suprising in my opinion.
I think unless we have a merged series, Bourdais won't get his full credit. |

With Junquiera and Wilson perhaps the most likely rivals to Seb this season, ChampCar has turned into a F3000 Super-Championship of sorts, whcih Seb has been winning in recent years. The problem is that nobody of proven F1 calibre is in the series, only guys like da Matta and Pizzonia. I believe Justin (and Bourdais) are good enough for Formula 1, but it's not easy for them to prove it. As mentioned, the younger French drivers seem to be very impressive, so I suspect his chance has gone.

On that front the best that Champ Car can hope for are drivers that have the talent, but not the opportunity (for whatever reason) to be in F1 - names like Bourdais, Wilson, Glock, Briscoe, Montagny - exactly how guys like Montoya and Zanardi got their breaks. As far as feeder series for F1, I see Champ Car and GP2 both as the benchmark - and I certainly think Bourdais deserves a serious look from F1 bosses. |

Come the start of the 2007 silly season I'm sure that a few rides will become available. There are a number of drivers in F1 right now that really don't belong there. And I'm sure that Bourdais's talent makes him more deserving than many of those. Whatever cake Bourdais and Flav baked will certainly crumble and go away eventually.
I'm not so much a driver fan, nor a team fan, so much as I am a car/technical director/aerodynamicist fan. But even then I think Bourdais has got the talent to be in F1. Heck, I think Allmendinger should be there instead of Speed. |
