Kobayashi seems to be on another level to his teammates in terms of the pace he can ring out the Toyota.

"Only" 3:20. Lots of time to come from Toyota.

Koba spins in on the front straight. He recovers, but that could be a set of tyres gone.

Shame McNish is partnered with the worst. Need to get him on RLM. Or RLM on the stream. This situation isn't the best for anyone.
Kobayashi going around as he absolutely attacks the Ford chicane. Algarve having a moment there too. |

Everyone hovering around the 3:20 mark.
67 Ford goes around. I'm not buying Ford have lost 5 seconds a lap though. |

Slow zone ruined the laps at the end. Amateurs!

That was a very calm and controlled first session. Couple of slow zones but no major issues. Very good opening.
Now. Let's see how fast they can go in qualifying. I want to see some records broken. |

I believe Toyota have been quite open with that. It's always sensible to go for it on Wednesday, because you never know if the Am drivers will have a silly season tomorrow and ruin your plans. If you have to do it twice, you have to do it twice. But given the amount of red flags we've had over the years, it makes sense to take the first opportunity you get.

Jani was set to do 3.20.0 while using the Hards. I think Porsche is capable of at least a low 3.18, using the Softs.

So could Porsche have been sandbagging all along?

Not if Toyota can do a 3:15 The track was hot and dusty, I don't think anyone would be on a softer compound with the heat the way it was.

If we get this weather for the whole race, wonder if we'll see a distance record

The likelihood of long SC puts paid to that in the modern world I'm afraid. It doesn't rule it out, but reduces the chance.

This is probably the best chance we'll have in a while at a distance record. Slow zones rather than SCs might help it, but the 2010 record was a hell of a pace.
