Gah, I _still_ can't find anything on the T3 class, even with those links. I hope that guy on the quad is okay. That VW Tarek was demolished!!! Just shows ya how effective a well-built roll cage is. The car's quite a dissapointment, though. Just not enough power from the little 1.9L diesel. Hmm... Maybe the gasoline engines _are_ the way to go. Wish I could find the displacement limits... If they'd allow in Isuzu's 3.1L turbodiesel for the class, that'd be perfect, much better than the litte 4-bangers. Probably a 2.0L limit, but you never know. Look at how long Judd's sports car engine's been well under the displacement limit! Last edited by Lee Janotta; 8 Jan 2003 at 03:07. |

I think it's sad that Schlesser is out. I mean, who am I going to "hate" now in this year's Dakar?

Nah, I like Servia, in spite of what happened two years ago. Servia may have performed the stunt, but Schlesser was behind it, in order to try to "win" the rally. Schlesser is the bad guy.

lee you can have I think even a +6000 cm3 ... your gonna be in T3 18 subcategory...
at least i think so .. after readind 10 sec .. but check http://www.dakar.com/concurrentsus/d...regtechFIA.pdf for turbo petrol and Diesel .. i think you have to multiply bu 1.5 for Turbo Diesel or 1.7 for turbo Petrol .. so 1.5*1.9=aprox.3.0 .. and the Isuzu 3.1*1.5=aprox.4.5 ar my math is wrong .. |

It looks to me as if you can race anything short of a Greyhound Bus. Are there any motorcycles besides KTM that have any kind of prayer in this thing?

The Greyhound bus observation was right until a few years ago when the regs were restricted a little (although looking at those Evo Mitsubishis, I guess we are back to T1 standards again, i.e. Gp.B and beyond) - current truck leader Jan de Rooy built a couple of extra-outrageous DAF prototypes in the mid-80s that eventually made it into the top 10 overall (didn't he have o/a stage wins??) - sadly, one of his team mates lost his life in a severe crash in '87; they had just overdone it, and built machines that were too fast for their own good. After that, when you had to have production based trucks, the Italian fire engine specialist Perlini built a few trucks based on AWD airport fire engines; they made the Kamaz and Tatras look very old indeed. I recall those images of the red Perlini screaming over the mountain roads of the Atlas, the tail stepping out like on a proper rally car. Magic. - I think that company doesn't even exist anymore.
Of course, there were the 959s, 205T16s, Evo Pajeros, Evo Land Rovers, Chrysler-engined Lada Nivcas (Oreca, Ickx), Toleman's 6R4-based special, Nissan Patrols, Merc 500SLCs (2wd & automatic!), Opel Mantas, before that the Renault 20s,... You name them. |

What's funny is that KTM initially appeared on the scene with the nimble 620cc LC4 1cyl. bike, and p**d all over the heavy 900cc twins; and now that everybody is trying the light & nimble approach, they give the world the LC8 - a 900cc twin Also, KTM is doing a Porsche - they sell "race ready" bikes. Makes the KTM attractive for privateers. |

Well, poor old Alfie Cox is out for this year -- he was clearly not a happy springbok when they helped him onto the helio this morning ... glad it was no worse, but I'm sure it was bad enough to suit him.
Also heard that another rider had broken his leg, but I can't remember the name. Not a good day for the teams all round eh? But the scenery in Libya is awesome. |

Then came 2001 when they had sorts of problems with the late John Deacon leading their challenge in a poor 6th (well, for their standards) - and I assume that bad year may have led to the end of their competition. |

Nani Roma Out
Juan Roma is out of the rally after a fall early in todays stage. I was really looking forward to a 3 way battle for the lead as well! |

I knew HE wouldn't last; he's the Mario Andretti of bikes, just goes like a bat until he destroys himself or his bike.
How is Sainct doing? |

Jag update: they are out of the event proper but still running, and following the rally as a support vehicle. The car was featured on Eurosport tonight, and still looks remarkably intact.
