Hehe, thats funny, I'm exactly the same. Obviously some tracks with great shapes might not necessarily be good circuits, but when you think about the track plans of most ovals out there...

Mallorca GP proposal:

T1 would be the longest corner in F1
T2/3/4 is something out of Buenos Aires (funnilly enough...), and creates 2 overtaking spots
T5/6/7 is basically the Moto version of Maggots/Chapple etc, and could create an overtake if someone goes wide in to the final hairpin
The next lot is basically a quick chicane leading to the final 2 corners, which I understand would require a heap of run-off.

12 turns, looks completely unique, and with enough run off would be safe.

I've also tried to improve Mallorca. I put more long straights, but not always ending in absurdly tight hairpins.

You made that for me? Oh that's so kind of you. Anyway I think all your modifications are good though the change to the first complex might not have made it better or worse. Still the rest is a real improvement and hopefully it'll turn out it isn't needed at all.

Here's my modification to des Streckezeichenmeisters version of Austin. Only three changes actually as the other one's I'd have done would have minimized the paddock space. Second one is the bare plans.

Exactly the sort of thing I'd do, quintin, smoothing out those corners.

Its a shame really with the original design, Tilke had an opportunity here to make up for his mistakes, but it looks like he's come along with a ruler and drawn a bunch of lines everywhere - and yet more hairpins.

Just gonna be another Tilkedrome, what we were all expecting anyway, but nevertheless disappointing. I'd love to know how he makes these designs, and how much thought he actually puts into them.

I bet, that he just throws a dice, deciding how many hairpins/90/45 corners will be in the final track. Then he pulls out his special dice, with only 0's and 1's to decide how many sweepers there will be. After this, he draws the corners connected with straights.
And he gets his cash.

Here's my effort. I actually really like what he's come up with this time, and I'm usually one of his biggest opposers. It's not perfect, but it provides a great starting point for an edit. I only changed the top section of the track to smooth out the top hairpin and give the backstraight more of a feel like that of the backstraight at Road America. I was considering getting rid of turns 14 and 15 and just straight-lining right across from 13 to 16, but I decided that would get rid of a lot of the tracks character. Enough talking, here it is! Tell me what you think!

Well I certainly like your idea. I'd love to see you replacing "hairpin" as a banked turn as that would probably make the track just a little bit better.

Quintin I love your redesign and I agree that Tilke has almost has something amazing here. Evevation is good in the 3D map, runoffs are minimal and seem like that they will be like the ones at Abu Dhabi, just please no horrible blue stripes, paint them green to look like grass. Hell I think there should be 5 meters of grass around the track everywhere untill gravel trap or tarmac runoff. Only cut down the trees absolutley needed to be cut down and it has all the ingredients for a classic but modern F1 track and American great.

Replacing the haipin with something carousel inspired from would be amazing. Turn one really has potential it is is an off-cambered downhill sweeper, same thing with the turn 8 mirror.

Edit: Here is my work with turns 2 and the complex bypass done by Quintin. The Carousel is obviously banked inspired by The Ring. Just notcied this, but I think the 3 apex turn should just be one long, fast sweeper, off camber ofcourse:

I would go with Quintin's idea, but leave the Turn 11 hairpin alone. Then, I would loosen up Turn 8 a bit, and make the Turn 3-5 esse more flowing. Finally, I would ease Turn 10 slightly, and have a lazy curve leading into the Turn 11 hairpin.

I think one thing that i've just noticed and might be worth pointing out is that we love long, sweeping corners, which tend to be a trait of the older tracks. It's said that the best kind of corner is one you need to feather the throttle and perhaps a smidgen of breaks. The cars run such high downforce now that those once challenging corners now seem easier (eg. 130r, Eau Rouge), so these flat out sweeps we know and love arn't now the challenge they once were in a Formula One car, so perhaps we do need slightly tighter versions such as some of these demonstrated in the Texas track.

Just a bit of food for thought, really.

I think you're on to something here Selby. Of course for other types of cars these corners still matter but you're right that in F1 cars the very fastest of corners have become the simplest of turns so to speak. However a slightly smaller radius turn will give the same challenge to a contemporary F1 driver as the larger radius curve does to an F1 driver of fifteen or so years ago in his car.
