Why don't we make a list of the 20 slowest drivers in F1 history ? That would be an achievement...

And very difficult, because such drivers would not have been in F1 for very long.
I think that the obvious omissions from the 'fastest' list are Hunt, Rosberg and Bellof. I was, however, pleased to see Wimille and Brooks on the list though. |

There's a world of difference between being a fast driver and a fast racer. Villeneuve and Senna epitomised the latter......

It would have been nice to have at least given an honourable mention to Stefan Bellof, the true successor to Villeneuve (including, sadly the inevitability that his retirement was always going to be enforced).
There are two examples that stay with me. First, the year that Prost "got" the Monaco Grand Prix stopped. Senna was furious, because he was catching at some four seconds a lap. Almost everyone forgets that Bellof was catching Senna even more quickly. Second, much like Nigel Roebuck's passenger ride with Gilles, I recall an Autosport writer at Le Mans one year. He was offered a lap in practice with Bellof in the 956. No belt, just braced against the roll cage. Bellof posted a time good enough for a Top 5 grid position... If he hadn't been taken so soon, he would surely be one of the most revered drivers of all time. |

This has got me to thinking about Johnny Herbert.... If he hadn't had that accident... Really seemed to screw him over.

I daresay you're right. But like the argument over how many WDC's Schuey would have by now if Senna hasn't been killed, we'll never know...... As for Johnny, who knows again? I was a big fan, a Racing for Britain member and I was there at Brands the day he had his accident. I also shunted my MG on the way there - spooky eh? I firmly believe Johnny would have gone on to win a lot more GPs if it hadn't been for Brands 88. |

I always remember an article in F1 Racing ( by Tony Dodgins? ) about how Johnny was the next big thing, the Benetton test, etc. They were talking about 5 or 6 titles, never mind GP wins.
