If you compare pit stops: Bottas' stop was timed at 2.24 seconds, whereas Verstappen's quckest was 2.27s. But, in comparing pit times, Verstappen was 0.358s qquicker. Ocon recorded a pit stop time of 2.33 seconds, but his pit time was 30.652s - or 0.843s slower than Verstappen. Why do I think it is interesting - despite only being 1/10th slower in the pit box, Ocon was nearly a second longer in the pit lane. The team can cost a driver a lot of time if they get it wrong, but the driver can also make big difference in their pit entry/exit result. Next time we see a driver trying to get out of the pits and retain a place by a few fractions of a second - their own driving may also be a factor. |

The most obvious example was Hamilton's stop, where his pit time was already in excess of 6 seconds when he reached his box, despite their garage being only a few metres from the pit lane entry line (speed limit line). |

EDIT: And it definitely makes the whole undercut/overcut battle a new animal. When it's down to a second or two in the pitlane it'll be interesting to monitor the situation from this new perspective. |

Pardon me for saying though, there is something a little sad (IMO) when we are talking of pit stop times and tenths and hundredths of seconds lost as the difference between positions in a Grand Prix..... I wish we were talking about overtaking on the track.....

I find it rather intriguing to be honest. And, in comparison to some seasons over the past decade or so, it does seem to be getting better in terms of on-track overtaking (at least at some circuits). But I fear that may be down to gimmicks like DRS, at least in part. Still though...gotta keep the faith!

If we got rid of the two compound per race rule, it would be so much better. Let them run what they want and if they want to run non stop through the race, let them

for me i like pitstops and its pretty nuts how fast some of these stops are happening these days.
a few years ago they were messing around with automated systems/that weird gantry thing which they have now moved away from as well as (i think) reducing the number of mechanics involved in the stop...but still the times go down. like when did sub 3 seconds become the norm? amazing speed and team work imo. |

Would love to see the levels of hysterical condemnation if you substituted Vettel's name for Hamilton on Lewis' race.
Took pole position car, flubbed start, clattered it over the curbs on the second corner and damaged the underside, fell off lapping back marker, pulled forward in gravel and drove into outside wall wrecking front wing, went a lap down, given lap back under safety car, and took car to second setting fastest lap of race. Vettel, Germany 2018, just short on sheer dumb luck. |

Quite remarkable to see how Hamilton is granted a free pass by by the press, journalists and all concerned though, for arguably screwing up much worse. |

Could this be the beginning of a massive slide into oblivion for Hamilton? I doubt it.

I really like Vettel. He’s a decent guy. Obviously you have to put things like this as this is the internet. I so want him to do well in the Aston. But there is a simple reason why Lewis wasn’t talked about like Vettel is when a mistake happened. Recently these mistakes are rarer for Hamilton and recently Hamilton has been winning loads of championships. So of course the reaction is different. Nothing more. Oh and if we compare to that off into the barrier at Hockenheim. Hamilton, and you can say luckily if you like, managed to get back out and secure second. |

'took car to second setting fastest lap of race' vs 'locked the rear brakes and went straight on into the barriers, taking himself out of the race' Luck, talent or whatever - the records will always show Hamilton scoring 19pts and Vettel picking up a DNF from his own accident. |

Too late to vote, but Norris. Could have been Max, but the safety car error was a bit silly.
