Steve,it should'nt be a problem in scrutineering, still points based rather than electronic. Thanks for that, could well be a remote condensor system on the way. Last edited by terence; 1 Feb 2008 at 10:49. |

Today I found a Motorcraft condensor still in it's bubble pack. I seem to remember they were pretty crap anyway. Think I'll bin it.

I was looking at the place from a building point of view and deliberately ignoring the contents
I'd still be there otherwise . . . .I'll enquire next time if I can have them ! |

Although noting Zef's reference to the 'moral high ground', I can't help but feel this is a bit of a storm in a teacup. I'd have thought that old style contactless ignition should be entirely acceptable if it resolves problems highlighted on this thread, and since there is no perceptible increase in power. My views are obvious from my post #2 and I'll claim that I am entitled to have them even though I don't race! It would only become a slippery slope if you allow it to. Surely, you should be saving your concerns about keeping as close to the original by confronting oversized engines, roller rockers, engine management systems etc head on? No prizes then for guessing which way my vote has gone! |

Thank you John,I thought that it might be an idea to start somewhere, see'ing as Electronic Ignition is fairly easy to hide, and the MSA/FIA seem to be aware of the big engine issue,as demonstrated by the fact that Masters are taking a bit of a lead in this matter, that we could perhaps work our way through the lesser issues and work upwards.

Sorry, Terence, it wasn't intended as a criticism. I'm just surprised that it's an issue at all, really!

points rule
£3 fail safe rev limiter any idiot can check very easily as well. 1 wire, cap off, cap on, go. I might add that my opinion is largely based on pre 1966 production touring cars. just before anyone jumps on my mapped EFI Rochadale system |

forgive me for being a bit thick, but why don't the FIA allow other (more reliable) distributor makes to replace the inferior types, most can be adapted to fit with a bit of ingenuity.
A Bosch distributor is much more reliable than any Lucas unit, so is a Ducellier, they are still a points type dizzy. We had a 1930s 8 cyl Delage in my workshop last year, eventually we figured that the twin point distributor was from a 1958 Chev Corvette, it might have made some difference to performance, but it was still points. I am considering altering a BMW distributor to fit a fifties Aston as parts are becoming more of a problem for the 6 cyl Lucas unit fitted, also the points & condensers are £22 each retail & we still get a lot of rotor arm failures aswell |

FastDB2s As I said in post 33 its no problem to adapt points n dizzies.
Not having read FIA regs I don't know if they actually specify a certain type for the model. To be fair about it a lot of the cars run the last type of distributor made for a "particular" model that wasn't fitted for the year of the car when it was made. So they might as well adapt any points distributor that is more reliable. |
