Ed Gorman does write some crap though. Not that I don't see why people have this viewpoint.

Hardly if Massa proves to be slower than Alonso (which may not be the case), I'd expect Kubica (who craftily is after a 1 year deal) to be slotted into the other Ferrari and give Alonso a proper hurry up!

Ferrari are still after two superstar drivers.

Indeed, as does his colleague Simon Barnes (on the subject of F1). It's a shame because the Times' football writers are second to none.

I hope that Alonso has matured after McLaren years. If he leaves Ferrari, there isn't anymore (usual-)top teams to go. So I think he will keep ihs head cool, even if Massa beats him.

That man is highly likely to be Sebastian Vettel.

Yeah, I'm wondering what a deal means anymore. Button incurred the wrath of many people on the internet when he got out of a contract, but what about teams?

It wasn't necessarily the getting out of the contract bit that people got annoyed about. It was the shilly-shallying and mind-changing - he said he wanted to leave BAR for Williams, and then halfway through decided he wanted to stay at BAR after all

Good or bad Alonso if going to ferrari and He will be paired with a fast entrenched to ferrari driver.
however, Alonso is a megastar, he can really rally a team behind him, and that is what ferrari have shown to help them operate better.
but what if Massa can not race just yet next season? it Fisi and Alonso again- and we know how that will end up.
as obnoxious and noisy as Alonso the PR storm is- the guy is freaking fast and has car control that is superb like the greats. A 2X WDC, is no fluke and the outside 130 R pass on Schumacher is legend (as was both his drift loaded drives through Singapore races.)
Alonso is a points grabber, a podium finisher, a winner many times over.
if ferrari have the car right- oh crap this will be good.
lets hope Maclaren can help Kimi and Hamilton get equal support to make it a real good season...

Given the present situation Renault need the best results they can get next year so why allow Allonso to leave? As you say, they have been average this season so will not be able to attract the very best drivers so I would have wanted to hang on to Alonso, not let him go.

To me this this begs the question of Renault's sincerity about staying in F1, could they quietly just become an engine supplier, pleading poverty due to lack of sponsorship? This way they stay in F1 but are relieved of the cost of running a team, Enstone goes but the engine shop stays

Alonso wanted to leave Renault for some time but didn't.

Ferrari wanted Alonso for some time but couldn't managed or didn't manage to sign him for a couple of reasons.

Renault wouldn't be able to offer him what Ferrari could (all ways..) in their current state regarldess of whether they stayed on or not so they wouldn't be able to hold on to him.
