Close Racer, it is definitely my car. Pip Barker told me they had a car nearly finished by the time he left the team at the end of 86 and that it was from a spare 325 shell they had. It may well have become the Finnauer car but to confirm this I'd need to see where the rear air jacks were. A low shot from the side is the ideal shot to show this. I've got a few old mags, I'll have to start looking through them again, but in more detail this time.

Am I correct in thinking that the 325i and M3 were identical and that the differences lay under the bonnet and with the suspension?
From this thread in the Chassis History section http://tentenths.com/forum/showthread.php?t=98823 I gather that all the M3s were built to a point by BMW and then sold to the teams who completed the build and numbered M3/1-001, M31/002 etc. Presumably the JPS cars were included in this. I guess it would be logical to try and capture the history of the 2.5 litre M3s here. Two Schnitzer cars were raced in New Zealand by Emanuele Pirro & Johhny Cecotto and Steve Soper & Joachim Winkelhock at the end of 1990 after which the Benson & Hedges team took delivery. These were used as the B&H racecars throughout 1991, with a 3rd car purchased from the Bigazzi team in Italy. This was painted in a white livery for the BMW Advanced Training Centre, it was used as the T car at Bathurst. One of the Schnitzer cars was badly damaged in Wellington at the end of the year, although I believe repaired. For the 1992 ATCC there 3 cars, 2 in B&H livery for Jones and Longhurst and the ex Bigazzi car for Paul Morris in the white livery it had appeared in 1991. For Bathurst 1992 there was a new car, I think this was the last ever M3 E30 built. For 1993 the team entered 4 cars, Longhurst and John Blanchard in B&H livery and Morris and Geoff Full in Diet Coke livery, presumably being the new car, the 2 Schnitzer cars delivered at the end of 1990 and the Bigazzi car. The last built car was sold to Cameron McLean who used it to win the 1995 Australian Sports Sedan Championship, Blanchard raced one in the 2 litre series in 1994, while one was sold to Asia. |

Hi Anthony, there are many common parts. The cars are basically built on the same floor pan but the only panel that is common is the bonnet. The doors are different, the front and rear guards are different, the roof and bootlid are different. The grill is the same, the headlights are different, etc.
I think you've got the B&H car history right, the #25 car that Denny Hulme died in was sold to Kevin Underwood a Kiwi who was living in the UK, but I believe has now returned to NZ. The Morris Diet Coke car is in NZ as well. The ex McLean car is in Sydney, I'm not sure of the whereabouts of the 4th car though. The M3 shell numbering is correct and the first 35 cars had this no. stamped into the right strut tower, I forget where the remainder were stamped? |

I believe the ex-Morris diet Coke M3 was recently bought back from NZ to Australia.

This thread is a bit old, but I can fill in some of these gaps anyway.

The ex Longhurst/Cameron Mclean car is now with Rick Allen in Sydney. Both of the 1993 Diet Coke cars are in NZ, as is the 1992 Longhurst/1993 Blanchard car.The white "T" car from 1991-1993 ( a very early spec. car) went to Asia until it sold recently to someone in the US. |

The car that Baigent crashed (Denny Hulme turned him into a spin which sent the car barrel rolling up and over a wall at Manfield) was completely destroyed. I think the steering wheel was salvaged, and not much else! The engine and gearbox were ripped out and smashed, all the suspension broken etc. etc. That was a Schnitzer car. Kent Baigent was pretty smashed up and broken too. I have the video footage here somewhere, a very nasty crash. |

Who owned the 635 that Graham Crosby ran at one stage in NZ ?. It was a red one I think from memory.

JPS M3`s
Some info that might help to distinguish the different cars.
It is correct that the factory shells were numbered M3-1-###. but the first 35 bodies were not numbered that way, but instead were hand stamped in a different place. Regarding the air-jacks, from the start all M3 Gp A bodies had the air-jacks outside the wheelbase, this was the case until the updating of the bodies to allow 18" wheels to be used from the start of 1990. The only exception was that from the start of `89 Schnitzer moved them inside the wheelbase. So any cars you see pre `89 racing in ATCC with air-jack within the wheelbase must be cars built by an individual team. Frank Gardner only bought one new M3 kit from BMW Motorsport & that was in `87, so the car with air-jacks outside the wheelbase you mention was probably this car. I have the chassis number. Seems possible that Gardner bought one factory car & used that as a reference to build the others from road bodies ?? I have some pictures of the art cars somewhere, will try to find them. Alex |

JPS M3`s
Sorry also meant to say that if any of the cars have a body number (7 or 8 digits I think..) stamped where the chassis number normally is (but there will be no chassis number..) then that means it was a new road body from BMW.

Chassis 11013038
The 1986 BMW JPS 325i has been advertised for sale here:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/List...x?id=266335540 From its CAMS logbook N5651 issued 24th January 1986 it was chassis 11013038, first being raced by Tony Longhurst at Round 1 in March and last at the Oran Park 300 in November. It was next scrutineered at Manfeild in New Zealand on 30th November, although according to the logbook ownership was not transferred to Bill Bryce until 28th January 1987. This would indicate that it was not one used by the JPS team in 1987. Last edited by anthony81901; 19 Jan 2010 at 05:41. |

Would seemingly be the car driven by Longhurst at Wellington in January '87, it also appeared in Denny Hulme's hands in the 1987 Pepsi 250 at Oran Park later that year too. When would Leo Geoghegan have raced it (possibly may have tested it... he was actively racing in Group E that year too)

Hi Guys
First of all I want to say this is a great website and lots of great reading. I am new here and I have a large project and I am in need of pictures of the Jim Richards JPS race car from 1984, its the Group C race car that he used for the final sesion before changing over to the Group A car in 85. I have a really nice 83 model 635 CSi that I am converting to group C Replica over the next year. There are not much in the way of picture of this car around so I am hoping that one of the members here would have some great pictures to help with my replica build. I need any picture to help with details and any extra infomation that may help me with the fun days ahead. I will be posting up some pictures of the car. Thanks so much in advance a.smithgolfpro@gmail.com Addam |

The beauty of the Wannaroo 300 is you can run basically anything from a street sedan to a sports sedan. So Paul should do well in this car as it runs a lot of the Group C running gear from the original AMR-002 chassis, from which the re shell was created by a previous (post Moffat) owner.

When I last went to the National Motor Racing Museum, Bathurst, there was a JPS Group C 635 on display. This would have been 2011.
My apologies if I've overlooked an entry. |
