The best time and place to get a feel for these cars in action, on a road course, is the weekend of June 22-24, Infineon (Sears Point) Raceway. Nextel Cup cars will be out for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 race.
Perfect place and time for many of the drivers & teams involved in Speedcar to do some intel work, and make some contact with those involved with the series that spawned their own. |

Kelvin88 - I'm not so sure about that (i.e. ex F1 drivers only). They are certainly trying to sell drives to some 'national' race series drivers in the Gulf for $550,000 - fact.

There's a misconception about the Arabian Gulf region when it comes to motorsport - which is a perception that because its a wealthy area and sells more high performance road cars than anywhere else in the world, it will be easy to make a quick buck selling / renting the locals some expensive race cars.
By way of example, Arabia 1 (stillborn), Formula-X (bankrupt), Middle East Carrera Cup (stillborn), Speedcar Series (watch this space). Both the FiA GT and A1GP series decided not to come back simply because there was not enough interest in their 'foreign' series in the area and their insistence on racing on a Saturday or Sunday for TV purposes ( a bit like putting on an International race event at Brands Hatch on a Monday!!). |

I think they want well known drivers (for example drivers who raced in GP Masters) and drivers from Asia/Middle East. A1GP shows there aren't yet many good drivers from Asia/Middle East.

Is the Mass series still going though? I'm on their mailing list and haven't heard anything since January.

Aborted Silly-idea Caused-by Expenses-beyond-belief Speedcar, in my opinion will happen, they are not Cup cars, they are composite bodies (like ASCAR's or ASA Tour cars), the deal has been done for them to follow/support the asian GP2 series in 2008. Whether it's right or wrong to expect ex-F1 drivers to run in them is up to the organisers, it's they're ball to kick around. Alesi was bound to be up for it, he went with V8Star, and still prefers cars that you drive, rather than one's that drive you, and it'd be great to see some "good ol' boys" come into it as well. They (the ex-F1 boys) just have to forget about understeer and oversteer, and learn tight and push, and thanking God for the win, etc.... |

It was announced in June that Speedcar Series will race in Bahrain. No date was told but it would be logical to have second round there while season starts in Dubai.
GPC Squadra Corse became today the first private team to enter the series. They will run two cars. 18 of 24 cars will be leased to teams and series organization will run 6 cars (for ex-F1 drivers, I guess). There's a 600 000 US Dollars prize for the Champion and the series will be supported by new GP2 Asia series from January 2008. |

Speedcar shipped two cars to Bahrain recently for a demo. The Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) subsequently put out a very supportive Press Release. But as you will see from the Press Release, published on the website, it ends with the following sentence: No race is currently planned for the Speedcars Series in Bahrain but nonetheless the organisers felt that visiting the BIC prior to the start of the first season, scheduled to begin in November, was vital. Man, ain't this going to be something to really look back on and read about when we find out that most the circuits, drivers, sponsors and potential partners the PR people kept hyping never had a solid (if any) interest in Speedcar and the series ends up fizzling out after a few PR demos and the initial team shakedowns?
It's like Team Racing Auto Circuit (TRAC) ALLLLLLLL over again.* *Google it, folks. This series looked somewhat promising with their bodystyles (Riley & Scott chasis, no less!) and Cale Yarborough being the spokesperson for the series! Only a few PR demo runs really came out of it, not even an official test session. Pity... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote:

There appears to be a reasonable similarity between Speedcar and GP Masters i.e. the championship organiser persuades some 'well known' ex-F1 drivers to drive on the assumption that Circuit owners will find local sponsors to fund the visitors.
Isn't this the wrong way around? Shouldn't the championship be finding the global sponsors to allow them to race wherever the sponsor would get his best return? |

Then again, who said that he'd be kicking anyone's ass. Only that this sort of thing is his bag.
So if it's going to be a GP Masters sort of thing, shall we conclude that it's dead already. Or are they going to alternate years - where GP Masters looks to be "in a coma" (according to sports press) for this coming year. When's the box party? |

In a coma? GP Masters has confirmed two events this year - Kyalami and Losail. Speedcar has confirmed one in Dubai.
Ironically, Speedcar will be on track in Dubai on November 10th and GPM will be in Qatar on November 15th - only 233 miles away. They should get together - then they'd have a great grid! |

Unfortunately, this reads like Alesi persuaded one of his mates to help fill the grid.
That's eight F1 drivers contracted already: Alesi, Herbert, Johansson, Karthikeyan, Morbidelli, Giroix and..........? Or was that six? Only 18 to go! |
