Is it me, or does that picture labelled "Schuey tries the 250 DTO prototipo for the first time" look 'shopped?

Not if it's to be a diesel in LMP2.

Even ignoring the above story, it is possible that the ACO may allow diesels in LMP2. There are many things that aren't allowed, until you ask! If anything could do it it might be a road car based engine, for a customer team, in a class that is percieved to be weak?

Thats a good point, I really don't see the ACO saying no to a diesel P2, motorsport is trying to become (or at least appear) more environmentally friendly, why would they allow LMP1 to go diesel but not LMP2?

Adam, But don't you think there would be a rule change to allow them before someone put time and money into the project?

Yes, they would want assurances from the ACO that it would be allowed. However I am talking more generally than the story highlighted here.

Of course and in reality, so am I. I just can't see anyone developing and funding something that is outside the rules, hoping to somehow get it allowed at a later date. Sorta goes against 'normal' thought process of building something that is within the rules in the first place. Yes, anyone can build anything they want outside any rule set and then attempt to get it allowed, but who would really take that chance?

Look at the MC12 that was built to the rules, only to have the rules change and be left standing on the outside looking in (with no hope of having their car ever allowed in an ACO sanctioned race).

The Ferrari would be inside the rules because it is bio-diesel which ACO could allow under the current rules for LMP2.

Where does it state that?

And for that matter, where does it state that bio-fuels are legal too?

I can't find it in the AOC rules.

Diesels are forbidden under 2007 ACO LMP2 rules and so are biofuels.
Art. 5.1 for engine specifications and Art. 17 for fuel.

Biofuels might be legal next year (Audi and others are interested) and Welter is planning a diesel P2, so that rule might also change.

Arn't WR supposed to come back in 2008 with a bio-fuel ?

Maybe thats a clue as to a possible rule change , cuz im sure Gerard Welter wouldnt go ahead with that , without the approval of the ACO .

I take your point on diesels in LMP2, but the ACO can consider the technical interest of a car when selecting entries for the race. I think that a bio-diesel LMP2 would meet this criteria.
