Ferrari was mentioned as being part of the talks on the new GTP style lmp's. Is there any fire behind this smoke?

It's Ferrari, think they're always looking where they can race. And now they can use this to threaten Liberty/FOM with leaving for if they don't get their way.

There would only be flames if a customer was willing to foot the bill like what happened with the 333SP. I wouldn't rule out such a thing happening with a new set of rules and lower costs.

Reading around, it seems Ferrari have a press conference planned for Friday. I do wonder if it has anything to do with a future in GTP or whatever the top class is called. They might not even brand it Ferrari but use another brand within FIAT. I've heard that rumor floated around.

Well the Maserati MC12 was always more GTP than it was GT1....
The 488 is also a bit older now. |

Looks to be a no-go on anything Ferrari related to the top class. Endurance-info saying the the stand for Ferrari's press conference has a 488 Pista pedestal. I guess the conference is going to be related to that car and possibly tying into Ferrari's GTE titles from last year.

Ferrari always show up to these things but never move near the top class. Which is fair enough really - always worth being involved in the talks just in case.
I wouldn't hold our collective breath for any sort of Ferrari LMP1. Even the Sauber Alfa Romeo deal is just stickers so far. |

That said I agree with Akrapovic - Ferrari is always around yet never moves up, so we shouldn't hold our breath. Maybe someday it will happen, but it's so unlikely at any given moment that it's foolish to get our hopes up. Besides, if we keep our expectations low it'll be all the more mindblowingly exciting if they ever DO make the move. |

It does show that branding excercises work. There are way too many people who think Alfa Romeo actually have something to do with the engine. Or with Sauber.

But that would have less than zero bearing on whether they build a P1/GTP/whatever car in the future. They committed to providing an engine with branding stickers, they did just that thus have provided 100% of what was asked.
And as Ferrari is NOT the controlling interest in Alfa (FCA is and Ferrari does NOT control those strings), the brief was to give Ferrari cash from FCA to provide advertising for the Alfa brand within motorsport. And as FCA is promoting and building Alfa internationally building a P1/GTP/whatever with an upcoming 8C style project could be a similar paying Ferrari for the engineering know-how and building a car through Dallara or other chassis. Using the Sauber deal as an example of X future thing won't happen is ignoring WHY the deal occurred in the first place, I think purely to crap on Ferrari for doing what they've done for decades now, build cars and sell them without much factory support. |

I think I'm missing your point. Ferrari, and the associated companies, aren't particularly interested in using other brands to enter other series and classes. They've shown that time and time again, and that's why we shouldn't hold our breaths for a Ferrari LMP1.
If we want to take a different look at why Ferrari won't be in LMP1 - because they haven't shown any interest in the top class at Le Mans for a good 50 years. The 333SP only existed to sell to customers and they gave them the bare minimum of support at that. |
