Honda found Formula One engines to be extremely sensitive to the percentage of oil aeration in the scavenge pumps, with reduction in parasitic loss (and thus gain in power: non-trivial of the order of up to 5-10hp) found from keeping the pumps operating at exactly the optimal level of oil aeration. Having the optimal amount of vacuum in the dry sump crankcase also affected the power output according to Honda's research papers. (Honda developed an elaborate system of multiple pumps with bypass & deliberate aeration etc, to ensure the scavenge pumps operated at the optimal level of oil aeration regardless of circuit characteristics.) Grove Team Principal reckons that parity has not yet been achieved.
Interesting when the team owner apparently said the complete opposite - parity OK. Hard to see how parity could not be OK really - all the testing, including wind-tunnel on both cars has them equal, the engines have now been through a transient dyno process with the same outcome now. Maybe for whatever reason the Ford teams were running a little more rake on their cars or something like that? |
