- The original GTR did the final rounds of the ATCC and was present at Bathurst at car 1T. Then used at the AGP by Richards and at the Nissan 500 and NZ events by Richo/Skaife. - The 'new' GTR had its only race at Bathurst as car 1. Skaife wrote this car off at the AGP meeting (although the Gibson team maintained otherwise). I could be wrong about this, but it looks like the original GTR built was used by Skaife in the 1991 ATCC (up to Mallala) and in the 1992 ATCC. I think I'm wrong, because it means that the oldest GTR was used to win the 1992 ATCC... |

Interesting stuff about the Esprit, hardly a Grp C or A though, can we keep it to the subject!!!!!!! (I'm not anti-Lotus, I've got the ex-Murray Bryden/Jim Murcott Super Seven in the Garage, more four leaf clover as far as I'm concerned but this thread is about C and A!!!!!!!!!!!!) I remember being at amaroo when Paul Pickett owned both those P O S and Jim Richard was entered to drive one of them. Jim went out in the car on the friday , did a couple of lap and came back into the pits and refused to ever get back into the car again. They would have to be the worst 2lt car ever built, just beating the aussie built corrollas

They arent horrible cars, just built on the cheap. The roll cages are very simple, not enough bars in them for my liking, the suspension pieces functional without being tricky.. she aint no Eggenberger car...
...but the bigger problem in both cars is the engine.. The AllDai had a carp engine design, it wouldnt make the horsepower. But instead of putting a conventional engine in the car (like from a Corolla or something) for testing of the chassis, they perservered with the ol' clunker.. and the driver couldnt tell if the chassis or the engine sucked worse. The idea has precedent... RouseSport did this a couple of times during the Mondeo development.. put a Carina engine in one at one stage. Its a shame when Fully crashed that first AllDai that it didnt totally write it off.. |

The engines used in both of the Lantra supertourers was a normally aspirated Lancer EVO motor!! Not a bad starting block, just that no time or money went into development. That was the downfall of both the Lantra's and the Corolla's. They were the only cars built here and they didn't have the money or development to make them competitive. It was a big gamble, but it was always going to be an uphill battle to be competative against the imports that had sqillions spent by manufacturers to make them into Supertourers. The downfall of the class in total, the crazy amounts spent!! |

The engine was hotrodded locally. If they used the standard Mitsu Evo powerplant, even without the turbo, it would have been a better unit.
Designing a whole series of things to make the engine run the opposite way to its original design did not help this at all. Then they started on some tuning work, with all sorts of air intakes and exhaust systems, none of which were super special at the time. Heaven help the fool who parts with $27k to buy that OHOS. Didnt the bloke who drove them originally end up at MSD in the UK with Hyundai? |

Steve Hardman, I think he ended up doing some rally stuff for them O/S.
Part it our for another race car, wheels, seat, dash, engine computer, brakes, could all go into such things as an Improved Production car, and the Xtrac gearbox (the expensive item that made the idea of changing the engine direction sound like a good idea) might be a viable seller on e-bay or some other manner in Europe? |

Hi Steve Holmes, I was at Donington last year for the RS500 reunion, the cars there with an Australian connection were the Moffat / Rouse '87 Bathurst pole car, the Rouse / Brock car which is owned by Steve Matthias who races in the UK Ford saloon car championship in an escort cosworth, and I was in my DJR sierra number DJR 1, this is the car that was second at Bathurst in '88 and sold to Robb Gravett for the '89 BTCC.There was also a Texaco Eggenberger car which has a very good chance of racing in Australia at some point.
Many of the original drivers also turned out for a drive in their old cars. Myself and Steve are hoping to get our cars in the Goodwood festival this year. Andy Lloyd |
