Tom Walkinshaw at the 1986 BSP, was he just a guest or racing at the time?
Thought it would be at the 1988 event for the BTCC event? |

I have obtained some video footage from the Birmingham Superprix track rehearsal in 1986.
There are plenty of footage of marshals at the start of the track test. So I have YouTubed it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1vxziPWkUs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXFbYULdIUo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSwEO0iYZEg |

Great videos! Didn't John Nicol (God rest his soul) look young......
Those were the days, but what ever happened to Birmingham getting the Olympics? |

TThanks for posting the videos,I did all the superprix and they were fantastic, saw some old friends on the video some sadly no longer with us....(John Nichol and George Harris) also Saddle bags had hair and Dave Vass posing in camera shot.I did most of the super prix with Dave....one year we were reported for being drunk on post and two car loads of FIA stewards turned up trackside to check us out.....we were not drunk it was just some disguntled marshal who was not happy that Dave did,nt let him bring his kid onto post causing trouble,if your reading this SHAME ON YOU!!! arrrrr those were the days.

I thought it would be a good time to revive this thread as this weekend is the 25th anniversary of the first Birmingham Superprix in 1986.

Never knew the marshals had been to the Overstrand. Wouldn't anybody else have you?!
The original press release described it as being 'bulldozed'. Those of you who know the place will understand what a difficult feat that would be since it's a good 20 feet up in the air. |

Apparently there was quite a lot of Bio-Hazard warning tape on display during the demolition |

For marshals that are (old enough to be) interested, I have uploaded the Marshals Allocation Sheet for the '87 Birmingham Super Prix on the Motor Sport History section. This makes interesting reading for the (soon to be) OAP marshals! Some of them are still at it! Poor old sods!

Wow, 25 years since I slept in the car outside M&S in the centre of Brum.
No wonder I was first at the circuit on race day morning (you won't catch me doing anything silly like that these days). I even had to help the ticket kiosk staff open their change float bags so that they could sell one to me. For those who weren't around, there was a major hurricane in the North Atlantic, just like this week. The tail end of it made it all the way to the West Midlands so the day was a complete wash out but it didn't put me off becoming a marshal a few years later. |

2. second ever meeting, so was learning very quickly. 3. paddock marshal, so not many incidents to report, one springs to mind! Cartel Transporters having a police escort (if memeory serves me correct) as the team transporter had been in trouble with some matches!!! at brands the week before. 4.Photos, only taken on brief momments while on a break. |

I seem to remember being on the last corner before Bristol Street one year,a tight left hander and Andy Rouse clattering the barrier on the way out during practise. It was a painful memory as we (me and my fellow flaggy) were squeezed between a brick wall and the armco and when Andy struck it my hip was in contact with the armco, ouch!!! I was on the first corner at the end of Bristol street when Martin Donnelly's stricken car was acting as chicane in practise with several cars just avoiding it and chewing armco before Eric Cheli totally destroyed it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKTuMiOkHfg I was the flaggy on the left with the black body warmer on,i was flagging that hard as it was right in front of us that i nearly fell of the scaffolding tower. Ahhhh brilliant days!!!! Last edited by Gas bag; 3 Nov 2011 at 22:44. |

Brum Superprix
[QUOTE=dave vass;2947345]Now look here TC, this is OT and OTT! Those unforgetable 'marshals suppers' (for which we must thank the BRSCC Midland Centre for their generosity/foolishness!) were something else!
The night in question? I don't remember a thing about it; if anybody asks me! ps Actually I wonder if they found my half burnt purple underpants during the demolition! That,(The P****s),was confirmed by my distant relative...Warwick. Thinking of Supper's Combe had some good ones?.....Just ask Howard! |
