The reason always cited is that it "isn't safe enough". They would look to the lack of run-off at Turns 10 and 11 in particular. Then again, the refurbishment going back to 2000-02 walled in the front stretch and made Turns 12 and 1 more abrupt. It also means Turn 1 now has basically no run-off, so I kind of fail to see the merit of their complaint in light of that. Not to mention, that's where Bob Wollek lost it into the embankment in a Porsche 962 back in 1987.

I think part of the contract involves some work at the Corkscrew on the curbing. It sounded like removal of some curbs that may have been too high for Indy cars with any off road excursions. I'll see if I can find where I read that, I think Racer though

Yeah, there were some notes about the requested modifications.
Just for some fun here, but the IndyCar official YouTube channel now has the 1996 race posted up. This was the first CART race held on the current, 2.238-mile layout. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYc4...w&pbjreload=10 |

From the Racer article re Laguna contract:
Modifications/Track work: The most intensive work called for in the agreement involves numerous upgrades to the 2.2-mile road course in the name of safety or specialization for the low-slung open-wheel cars. Tapering the elevated ‘sausage curbs’ found at the apex or exit at some of the 11 turns will need to be completed at least 60 days prior to the 2019 event and, like the rest of the items on the list, all would be at Laguna’s expense. Bolt-in cement slabs behind the existing curbs on entry to and at the Corkscrew itself will be required, gravel beds must be smoothed with no more than a three-inch variation in height, brake zone markers — per IndyCar’s requirements — would be added, and conveyor belts would need to be installed around all tire barriers. Two more rows of tire bales have been identified for inclusion at Turns 2, 5, 6, 8, and 10. Hundreds of feet of new debris fencing have been outlined for Turns 2, 4-5, 6, and 8. Looking ahead to 2020 and the possible track resurfacing being considered by the county if enough funds are available, IndyCar has asked for the outside of Turn 2 to be paved, and for debris fences to be installed on the front straight between the track and pit lane. Money: Details within the three-year proposal, made available to the public by the county, also spell out a sanction fee of $1.2 million for 2019, but only if the circuit’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship event is held the week prior or week after IndyCar. A fee of $1.5 million is outlined if IMSA and IndyCar are not on back-to-back weekends, and the same price tag would be required in 2020 and 2021. It’s believed a range of $1.2-$1.5 million is the same amount that was floated to Sonoma Raceway to continue hosting IndyCar after its contract ends following the September 16 season finale. Up to three Mazda Road to Indy series are included in the proposal at no cost to Laguna, and a minimum of nine hours of total track time for IndyCar activities is required. |

Apparently Sonoma leaving IndyCar was financial.

I had not even known Sonoma was in a contract year. What other tracks are? Detroit and TMS, I guess. Pocono maybe? Last edited by Yannick; 19 Jul 2018 at 18:54. |

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is willing to play ball with IndyCar about continuing the Belle Isle race and has made a counter proposal. Basically, DNR wants:
• A little higher park use fee, $310,000 a year instead of the $300,000 a year offered by race organizers. • A larger contribution to the park. Organizers offered to give $50,000 as DNR deems appropriate plus $35,000 for paddock projects/programming. DNR wants $100,000 a year to be spent as it deems appropriate. • Stronger contract usage on set up and tear down time limits (62 day max), including a guarantee that access to park roadways and features be restricted for no more than 21 days. • Limits on where the television helicopter flies. A USA Today story is available here. |

If Natural Resources is bargaining, Penske can make a deal.

Excellent. This is what the series needs, building on a stable platform of traditional races and then expanding.

Traditional and poorly attended? They could keep going to Phoenix for that and fewer cars would be broken. Detroit is a BORE that lines Penske's pockets, it should have been let go and replaced but Indy needs Penske too much.

Fewer cars would be broken? The first lap accident at Phoenix in 2017, practically wiped out half the field? The previous year there were 6 FCYs. If Detroit is lining Penske's pockets, the last time Team Penske won, was at Race 2 in 2016. |

I don't get the mindless bashing of Belle Isle either. The racing with the DW12 chassis has been quite good, especially on the Long Course, which they've been using since 2013. It may be a rough, non-permanent course, but so is Toronto, or any number of others. It's not filled with 90-degree corners, and isn't in the middle of an industrial wasteland or stadium carpark. On average speed, it's actually been a bit quicker than the layout at Sonoma that IndyCar hs been using.

It's not mindless bashing. Detroit is a street circuit and some like them. Some don't.
I like it but prefer maybe an annual swap between Detroit and the Burke Lakefront Airport. |

If the complaint, "boring" (i.e. no passing, no close action, slow, tight, twisty), is inaccurate, then the criticism is mindless.
I'd like Cleveland on the calendar, sure, but I don't mind Detroit having an annual event too. I don't think you'd retain audience just doing it every other year. Look what's happened to other events that missed only a single year, like Toronto. All that said, I'd be more than fine with simply having one race on Belle Isle; just make that one 85 laps, instead of the current double with 70 apiece. |

Whether something is boring or not is a matter of opinion, not accurate or inaccurate.
