2008:
BTC Racing originally looked into upgrading to the Lexus IS220 before acquiring the ex-Motorbase SEATs. Andy Neate was in the frame to join Team RAC until they signed Jelley. Wasn't this the year he had that big crash in Britcar? |

Thanks for this thread and the replies to it. I'm finding it all very interesting as I didn't know of most of these, and am enjoying contemplating what alternate BTCC histories could have been like.

Back on subject. I know James Nash eventually drove the RML Lacetti in '09 but I vaguely remember him originally being linked to the 2nd Tempus Lacetti. Last edited by Nononsensecapeesh; 22 Sep 2021 at 17:51. |

Here are some I can remember from recent seasons. Lots of them were discussed on tentenths so you probably already knew them, but I'll write them anyway.
2021: Crees was originally meant to drive the BTC car instead driven by Proctor. Cammish was originally meant to drive the Dynamics car instead driven by Shedden/Rowbottom. Bobby Thompson was heavily linked to both the Excelr8 car driven by Parfitt and the PMR car driven by Lloyd. Parfitt also linked to PMR. Senna Proctor was in talks with Ciceley over the drive that went to Tom Chilton. Tom Ingram was in talks with Motorbase/MB over a drive, with Osborne loaned to PMR. This never happened, of course. Sutton was briefly linked with WSR. I doubt this was ever a serious possibility. 2020: Jordan lost his WSR drive at the last minute. Plato and Mat Jackson lost their PMR drives as the team pulled out at the last minute. Dan Rowbottom lost his Ciceley drive to Jack Butel very late. Mike Bushell was meant to drive for HARD, as was Howard Fuller as his replacement. Ollie Brown got the drive instead. Before that, I didn't follow the silly season rumours, and just waited for the drives to be confirmed as fact. But these are a few little things I remember. 2019: Bushell was meant to drive for HARD, but pulled out and was replaced by Goff. 2018: Mat Jackson was signed for Motorbase, but left due to the possibility of a Team Dynamics drive that instead went to Cammish. I think Shedden was actually signed originally as well. 2017: Stewart Lines was supposed to drive the full season for Maximum, but was replaced by Josh Cook late on. 2016: I believe Handy Motorsport were going to run two cars for Austin and Belcher, but only ran Austin. 2015: Again, may be misremembering, but I think Alain Menu nearly got the second Motorbase drive that instead went to James Cole. |

I just found a very early prediction I made for what I think was the 2017 driver lineups (as you can see it was extremely wrong!) It might have been 2016 given that there are lots of references to 2015 in there, but I think it was 2017. The majority of these were totally random guesses but I think some of them might have been based on actual rumours. I don't remember which ones, but I'll put it here to see if it stirs up any memories.

WSR intended to run two MGs in '05 but only Collard's entry appeared. Of the drivers linked to their 3rd entry in '06, I think Stuart Hall was one of them but there were so many, I lost track ('scuse the pun).
Vic Lee's team initially looked into running Lexus' in 2002 but stuck with the Pugs. I think Erdos and Eaves (and possibly Soper before he retired) would have been the drivers. Eoin Murray would have continued into '08 had he had the funds. I think Pickford expressed an interest in a 2007 return. Erkut Kizilirmak tried but failed to run his Astra Coupe in the 2008 finale then sold it to the Boulevard team. He intended to return in 2010. 2006:
HPI Racing looked into continuing with just one Lexus, most likely with Richard Williams driving, however this didn't happen and the cars later reappeared with BTC Racing. Peter Dumbreck was linked to SEAT. Jonathan Fildes was linked to a guest drive as a prize for winning the Clio Cup. 2007: Geoff Steel Racing looked into upgrading to the E90 3 Series and expanding to two cars, hence why Kelvin Burt was linked to a return with the team, he would have been Martyn Bell's team-mate. Darren Dowling was meant to do a full season with BTC Racing until they signed Leason. They did intend to sign someone else after Leason left but their 2nd car wouldn't be seen again until '08 when they hired Stuart Oliver. James Kaye and Synchro Motorsport were looking to upgrade to a Super 2000 Civic but ultimately pulled out. Rick Kerry and AFM Racing originally intended to run two cars. I believe this was part of the shoot-out to decide the driver that would fill in for James Thompson when he was unavailable.
The seat, of course, went to Darren Turner. However, in addition to Dumbreck, I believe another driver to have tested for SEAT was Mat Jackson. |

Jonathan Adam looked into entering the BTCC in 2005 but decided against it. Tom Coronel was interested in entering the BTCC full-time. I can't remember the year he was aiming for but I know it was after his one-off with SEAT in 2007. After their failure to enter the Production Class in 2003, CMS Performance intended to enter Nick Leason in a Super 2000 Ford Focus in 2004, I remember Leason saying so when he drove the Daniels Motorsport Astra in the last two meetings of 2006. Aha! I knew it was definitely after '07 and definitely not '08.
From a previous thread but edited: Steve Soper was offered the Nissan seat in 1999, oh if only he had taken it … (no offence to Aiello) Dick Johnson & John Bowe were rumoured to drive a Trakstar Sierra in 1989 in the Donnington 1 Hour Endurance race in 1989. Greg Murphy tested for Renault in late-1998 and his Vauxhall drive was to have been in 1999. |
