I seem to recall that's the case too.
So, why did Sullivan say what he said? Well, it's motor-racing and people say strange things! |

John Edwards
Hey guys,
I drove for Gelles Racing in the N.American Formula Renault Championship this year, we had John Edwards testing the F.Renaults with us at Beaverun, Pennsylvania for a day back in June. Anyways he's actually 13 I guess, and he was pretty quick for a little guy like that. His best lap was about a second off mine, but I was pretty impressed. His dad seemed like he was putting quite a bit of pressure on him though. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. Now that he's with Red Bull his whole life is gonna change pretty quick, and Red Bull's gonna own him for a while and so on and so forth. Oh well we'll see what happens. There's a better photo of him on the Gelles web site: http://www.gellesracing.com/ |

NEWS FLASH!! Red Bull wants John to find his own ride in a series and then they will fund it. I thought they were looking out for his career; shouldnt they be doing this for him? He has two choices, skippy or karting....I would go to europe race JICA learn, test every weekend and if you are good then you will be top 3 in the 2006 JICA European Champ.

This should be good for John, working with Rossi and having a track within walking distance should really help him.

We'll see.
He's never driven a 2 cycle kart and his first race is the last of Jan. U.S. karting is not as competitive as Europe so we agree, he'll have his hands full. Time will tell. Mrinvader is right in my view, he'll need testing and living with the team to get up to speed. We took him out of school to totally devote his time to the karting team and effort. His mother will live separately so that he is integrated into the team as effectively as possibly. |

Do stop by. No, he does not have a tutor as yet. His school here is going to graduate him from the 8th grade, but I have instructed them that he is to have no assignments until Feb. He can catch up, but he should make racing the priority to see that he gets off to the right start with the team. Even if he does not place highly, he must show that he is committed if the team is to continue to support him. Please stop by and visit him. Are you going to be there for the international race, or for the winter cup?

Im not sure I see the wisdom of putting a guy with single seater experience in karts for a few years, teach him bad habits, then putting him back in single seaters.

what else can you do with a 13 year old kid??? FBMW in Europe doesn't accept anyone younder than 15 (I think) so, unless he stays in the USA, he doesn't have much choice. IMO 12 / 13 is way too young to be racing single seaters anyway - I actually believe that FBMW shouldn't be taking anyone younger than 16. I didn't let my son into a kart until he was 16, just to be sure that it was his desire rather than mine.

John is so young he pron hasnt developed his skills yet. Seeing if he can compete with the big boys and how fast he learns is much more important. Plus Skip Barber cars teach you a whole lot of bad habbits. One last thing. European drivers are not any better than americans...there are just more of the "fast guys" and they race a lot more. The top drivers have done 10 races by the time us americans have done 3 races in a year.

The decision was made by John and Helmut Marko. His experience with the cars was quite good and I personally would have preferred for him to continue with the Skip Barber Series - and while those tube chassis cars are not ideal they served AJ Allmendinger, Scott Speed, Colin Fleming, JPM to a minor degree, etc pretty well,,,and the wheel to wheel racing is the best in the US by far,,, sort of similar to British F3,,,,,,,,,,except not at that level by far...........
Luizzi still karts alot, and a number of the "ladder series" guys continue their karting I'm told............in any regard the decision is final and we'll see...... John is actually testing the F BMW car today and through Thur in Sebring with Gelles Racing........we'll see how he fairs with the others who are testing in preparation of the upcoming Valencia test by BMW............. Russfeld: could you give me your contact info: My email is edwardsmichael@uams.edu..........I read your Minardi article with Atlas F1; quite enjoyable............also I'd like to have JOhn contact you since he'll be in Italy........... |

To Mrinvader: I hear that you are headed to the Skip Barber Shootout: good luck. Clearly that is the most tightly contested series in the U.S. The cars are not impressive, but the competition is...............this year finds a number of real competitors including Giessen et al................hope to see you in Sebring for the first race................

There is clearly some strategic thinking in the Red Bull driver support programmes.
This 13years old Brazilian is actually quite quick in the national championships. But the world is getting crazy, these kids should live their childhood like children and not like "professional racing drivers" Watch his profile: http://www.redbull.com.br/article.ac...534-1424258424 |

He is racing Karts in Italy this year and planning on competing in the 2006 Formula BMW ADAC Meistershaft in Germany. I heard that he wasn't the fastest at the Red Bull final, rather a 16 year old young driver by the name of Summerton was 0.8 quicker! Whats the go?
