it's a great shame the national and local governments missed the boat with vergne and bianchi. this year would have been ideal for a french gp, but there's something missing from any of their f1 venues that really inspires. ricard is in a magnificent part of the country, and yet it's largely soulless. shame. |

Bugatti at Le Mans would be nice too... Just no political interest whatsoever. In fact, besides Fillion who is from the Le Mans region, nobody cares anymore... Almost against it for the reason mentioned earlier. So sad. The French tradition was just as big as the English one with so many great talents coming through... Do you realise that they are 4 French F1 drivers on the grid at the moment and no one interested?!?! If it wasnt for Boullier's amazing efforts, Total would not have backed Grosjean either... Amazing for a country with 3 major manufacturers!!

France has such an amazing history of motorsport and for car manufacturing in general (Citroen DS was, and still is, a technical and visual icon). But you can't really blame anyone if the French are hell bent on saving the planet, single-handedly.

Anyone remember back to the end of season YDT, what was the measure of Da Costa and Frijns> They both got RBR seat time. Does that suggest its never too late to joint the RB program? I mean they signed Bourdais up in the middle of it all.

If someone else has done the heavy lifting for them I am sure they would be more than happy to accept a talented driver into the fold. Telling Dr. Marko to go to hell, would seem not to be the best way through the scheme though! Although Webber seems to have got away with it for a while! |

So I go back to what the general read of Frijns and Da Costa when testing the same car at Abu Dhabi last year?
Frijns also tested for Sauber and signed on with them...but with that falling apart...if he did enough to show his wares to Red Bull why woudlnt thye consider him above Da Costa ... or at least have a drive/test off between the two of them??? |

Well that wasnt very wise to say such things about one of the more recognised paths to F1. I suppose he can court the reserve driver at Lotus as Valsecchi could be easily nudged aside

The most aware of the situation is the driver most in question... Thumbs up for acknowledging it. Let's see what comes next!
Da Costa: This year I have not yet done enough to get the Toro Rosso seat |

i like how you're happy to judge da costa harshly, but are keen to give bird the breaks when in fact really their careers aren't all that different

Bird's path for me is only fascinating because he has been an outsider from day 1 and fought through the field and got picked up by F1 with no system behind him. Not a rich kid, just average + but generated more and more interest as he grew. If everybody was screaming for Bird, I might go why the sudden wake up call myself!! But no title for neither of them, the only parallel I see. So if da Costa is seriously considered, why not Bird elsewhere?! Or both fighting for the same seat? I dont' know. You tell me! |

ok, fair point about the parrallel to vergne and ricciardo. so if we want him to match up to them he'd need to finish 2nd in the championship. he's never going to run the winner close like they both did, but let's just look at the numbers. if you seperate him from the team - because vergne and ricciardo didn't have the same issues that he has done so far - then drop that to third. it's only fair.
can he finish third this season? well, he's tied with melker for third at the moment and 8 points behind them is muller. i don't have a data point for melker at paul ricard, but tech1 went well both there and bcn last season. muller is pretty handy at ricard, but hasn't done well at barcelona for a good few years in any car. so if he can hang onto the pace and tactics he and the team displayed in race 2 in hungary, why not? i'm not 100% convinced by da costa full stop, but i don't think an extra year outside of f1 would improve matters. i'd say pretty much the same about bird (sorry!), whereas i am 100% convinced about magnussen, and i think the timing is right for him to end up in f1 next season. |

If I recall correctly, Ricciardo came 5th in WSR in 2011, in the same team Bird competed in the following year.

i was thinking of the previous year, when he was fighting with aleshin and guerrieri for the title. by july of the following year he was in a hrt after winning at monaco for the second time. he'd also been doing f1 friday practice sessions, so i don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that it wasn't really his main priority. a bit different to his 2010 year i'm sure you'll agree.

2010 wasn't a very strong field iirc? Didn't recall he had won Monaco twice, same as Bird.
