hahaha! yes i know, not very hard at all, its ok doing common easy words in small broken sentences, the online translators arent quite good enough yet, itd be quite easy to get a message deleted as spam when someone gets a literal translation! its only recently that the few translators i do use spells marshal correctly (with the right context) in the majority of languages, pretty much most times i have had to use translators and hoped for the best, didnt get much replies...

I'm really not sure where you're coming from on this. You say you've got into events in the UK that are 'quite hard to'. I wasn't aware that there were any, other than a few demand a certain level of experience and a selection criteria is applied.

As for who to contact, as with any event it's the Chief Marshal or marshal's secretary. It's not unreasonable that they should expect a common language since you're expecting to spend all day - or week-end - on post with them so they need to be able to converse to at least a reasonable extent. If you can't manage an answerphone I imagine that post briefings will be somewhat of a challenge.

The great thing about our marshalling hobby is that you can go all over the world to partake in it. That doesn't mean that you can expect to and I doubt that chiefs all over are sitting by their telephone in case some foreigner wishes to converse in their own language. There is some assistance available from the MSA and other marshals, but on the whole you need to get out there and sort it yourself, and if you're struggling with that then it's a reasonable guide that you may have difficulties when you get there as well. You should always view an away trip as being a guest of the organisers in just the same way as if you were staying in their house.

rallies where the majority of people have never heard of or been to, certain oval car, speedway race nights with some private companies you need weird training for certain track days,. i wasnt talking about your normal meetings like goodwood and f1, almost anyone gets let into them some time or another and theyre easily booked and located (on a world famous circuit! or hillclimb)...

Rallies Ask Ian Briggs (On Here) - there won't be any that he's not heard of!
Speedway Try http://www.speedwaygb.co/gbe.html (Governing Body) or speak to the promoter at your local track
Private Companies Self explainatory really!

Speedway and private events (ie Non-MSA sanctioned events) means you will not be insured by the MSA (Not 100% sure if this extends to BMMC)

probably wont be insured if its not under msa permit, well worth an ask though

LOL - mere motals! NewYankee you confuse me - you turned up at the start of the season proclaiming that you were a newbie and a trainee and now you've been there and done everything better than everyone else and know everything about everything...if this were Pistonheads we'd be calling custard!

Slow down, learn your trade quietly and then maybe next year or the year after that set sail for foreign climes.
I keep saying it.
Others who travel widely have to accept you before you can join in with them.
You can come across as a bit frantic in print.

Maybe any written communication you have with non English speakers comes across even worse. How are you doing at these events that us mere mortals know little of when the chiefs meet you face to face?
Positive feedback?

Marshalled post 8(old post 4) at Spa F1 this year. Have marshalled meetings at Spa previuosly. I also have contact for Zolder and work with a regular team when I go over there. I have invites to Assen and Zolder so will try and fit them in for 2012 hopefully. Alot is who you know. I have taken marshals to Zolder before and would happily take a couple over again. St Gueno Hill Climb in France is an excellent event and is already on my calander for 2012. Accom already booked too. And Le Mans when I can.
Marshalling abroad is great fun and a great learning experience.
Found it hard to get into Monza for a non F1 meeting but Vallelunga was an experience.
I do miss Croix though.
Give it a try but I recommend you go with a small group or someone who has marshalled abroad before for your first time at least

International marshal

Have you contacted the MSA to get a letter of international permission or for a better word introduction [can't think of a better term to call this certificate/letter]? It gives your grade status/name/address etc. Mine for 2012 arrived today now need to figure out the next step which I guess is applying for events or being invited.

It's good to see a simple question is getting so much attention

I don't often get to post in this part of the forum and I don't want to start an arguement as to whether I now count as a marshal ( incidentally, I believe that I do - it's just a 'specialist' grade). During my years on post before the 'post' became race control, I did many overseas meetings and have now been lucky enough to continue doing that in my current role. I've had some fabulous times, made some lasting friendships and learnt so much.
The point of my post is to reiterate Woolley's point, particularly the last sentence. It's a great experience if you can (and want) to do it but always remember that you're a guest and behave accordingly.
The world of motor sport may give you the opportunity to offer your services but not to expect the organisers to accept your offer or to make allowances for your language skills (or lack thereof)

Your posts do sometimes come across like that, yes. It's also rare that I (and I think most people) notice that something's been edited. There's so much on this and other forums on Tenths - plus "real life" that I don't have the time. All of which means that we're left with the first impressions. Could I suggest that you write a draft.... Leave it a bit... Edit it... Then post.

Can't help feeling thats also your approach to marshalling.

You start the season as a trainee and already you appear to assume you can flag to the GP next year.

Foreign Chief Marshals will often ask visitors who have worked their events previously, and who they know and trust, if the new applicant is known to them.

First impressions here as much as abroad are a major factor in what the reply could be. None of the people who marshal regularly want to upset their relationships by recommending someone they are not sure of.

Charlyw001 I am sending you a PM
