but isnt that an argument in favour of having more experienced hands on deck?

but if thats the guideline i am curious to know how you would then categorize the 1995 era Williams team as a non works entity? thats probably going too far off topic and the line gets blurred for a few of these teams anyways, so to try to flip it back let me ask, is there an underlying belief here that if a team doesnt have a legitimate chance at winning a race (or even a point capable scoring car) that they should be more open to developing drivers even if it comes with a cost/risk of limiting the development of their car? |

I have to say it's a shame limited numbers means some talented drivers miss out, but at the same time there's no driver on the current grid who I feel shouldn't be there. All have warranted a place

if f1 included everyone who warranted or deserved a place each race would have grids of 200+...

Yeah, which is probably a good thing we've always had the alternative single seater career across the pond

An improvement for sure but also careless. Unfortunate.

Palmer showed some promise today despite his issues and some unfortunate stuff in qualifying. Interesting how the next few races will unfold for him.

Much 'quicker'this weekend. The first meeting he's had the edge on Kev in general I think.
It will be good for his future if he can keep it up. |

Ron Dennis said after Kevin Magnussen's first GP that he expected him to be a future world champion.
As JP is now beating him, that could mean he will be a multiple world champion |

A good race for Palmer, shame he made that spin, but I guess that's partly to do with the marbles at the circuit when you make a mistake so fine, any other circuit it might not have been so bad
We actually had 40 cars on the entry list, but the FIRST team pulled out |

I've said this before and will say it again: Palmer spent all of last year at Enstone as their test driver, so they must have a pretty good idea of his qualities and they chose to promote him to a race seat. That must say something.

The corner has spun in is a very technical and difficult corner tho. That said, nobody else had a spin in that corner, whatever that means

He's got the capacity to be OK with more experience. Look at what Petrov did, and I would struggle to say he is a better driver than Palmer. But he'll need backing to get there, because Palmer doesn't seem such an outstanding talent that a team would put their faith in him for that alone. There'd be better choices in that instance.
I suspect he will be safe as long as there's no better alternative. Ocon could use more experience before he's promoted (compare with Wehrlein's DTM development...). Maybe that will give him enough time to hang on. I mean, Sutil made himself into much more of an F1 driver than I expected. But if Renault could get a potential star or more experienced hand... I don't see why they should persist with Palmer. |

Not sure Mercedes would let Ocon go to a rival factory team. Palmer's seat might be in danger if Massa is on offer, as I can see what he might bring to Enstone. If it's a straight fight between Magnussen and Palmer, Jolyon doesn't quite seem to have the same buzz around him, whether that's fair or not.

They promoted him because he paid millions for a two year deal guaranteeing a race seat in year 2 Bernd!

Not really because Renault are not bound by that contract but honoured it in goodwill

That seems remarkably charitable for a major car manufacturer.

I agree though I am sure JP senior would fight if it came to it, and he did pay for it - helping Genii lose less than they would have done in 2015
