That's a very interesting dilemma and I'm really curious how they can work it out. How likely is Red Bull and Ferrari picking new drivers specifically for a DTM programme? It's all down to the financing but as both Ferrari and Red Bull already have their factory drivers/juniors, I can't see it as very likely. It's been quite silent on AF Corse recently but I'd still be quite surprised if they pulled out after all.
Quite a shame Cassidy is unavailable, I'd like to see him full time in the DTM. |

According to Motorsport Magazin, David Schumacher will join Maxi Götz and Lucas Auer in WINWARD. Rumours about Schumacher have been circulating for quite a long time but when Mercedes unveiled their factory drivers for DTM, I didn't think David's DTM debut might still be the case.

You're starting from a wrong premise, AF Corse DTM program isn't something related to an official ferrari backed factory program as it is in WEC or GTWC... it's just redbull hiring AF Corse to run a couple of 488 under redbull/alphatauri insignia.
The only way to see drivers like pierguidi or calado running in dtm 488 is redbull paying ferrari to have work drivers in their cars, but not being a factory program is more likely to see drivers picked among redbull contracted drivers as we have seen last year. |

So really the question is whether Ferrari think DTM is worth sending a factory associated driver to, which could potentially happen this year when it didnt last year, as Red Bull seemingly have less options this year |

And you're wrong, it doesn't happen all the time, actually only few selected customer teams receive factory support... think about how many teams use audi R8 gt3? And which of them usually receive factory support? Only WRT for full GTWC season effort and other teams like phoenix, attempto, sainteloc for 24H races only. Speaking about AF corse DTM program, is quite simple, redbull wanted to race in DTM, they contacted and hired AF corse to grid cars and manage redbull DTM program with all drivers involved being redbull contracted drivers. There is no direct involvment of ferrari intended as "factory" as happens with AF Corse when they run and manage ferrari work racing program in WEC (which it would be actually bizarre considering the huge hostility between ferrari and redbull). AF corse manages private and unbacked racing programs of many other teams, like cetilar racing, MR racing, spirit of race etc... |

In other news, it looks like T3 is more likely to field just a single Lamborghini this season, either for Esmee Hawkey or Maximilian Paul. The third Ferrari from AF Corse is now rather unlikely, whereas there are still some efforts to have Aston Martin on the grid. David Schumacher's entry seems more and more certain.
As for the Aston Martin rumours, I'm really curious which team is in frame to (potentially) race in the DTM. I don't think it's R Motorsport, which had a season in DTM (do they exist?) and it looks it's not T3 either. One of the candidates for the drive (if this comes to fruition) is Nikki Thiim. As in 2021, AF Corse will be present in the DTM with Red Bull and two drivers who will be announced shortly.

I think its probably very safe to rule out a third AF Corse car too, Amato Ferrari's interview on Endurance Info said they will be back with red bull, and TWO drivers
Schumacher and Hawkey put us at 28 if you include the 2 AF Corse cars. They did say 30 is the limit, so if T3 bring a second car, and TOKSport bring that Aston Martin as Racing Harz suggests, the DTM will be at max capacity, a pretty solid achievement after the last few years You can argue that this new format isnt necessarily what the original DTM was, but I dont think there is much arguing that this is now the strongest GT3 SPRINT grid for 2022. If only it managed a Mclaren, and a Honda NSX!! |

Apparently there are still quite good chances of T3 having two cars again - Maximilian Paul is a favourite to this seat.
DTM as a GT3 series still seems to be a bit of an interim solution but the interest from many teams this year and an extremely strong field of teams and drivers show that DTM is a brand that is very attractive and if only teams can afford to go there, they go for it. There are many teams that used to be a pinnacle of ADAC GT and now they're in DTM (some of them only in DTM). It might not be what the original DTM was, as you argue Bcarr6, but, on the other hand, the original DTM was a touring car championship having cars that raced almost all around the globe. Now they use GT3 cars, so that's a switch to GT, but, you know, the point is, original DTM didn't use their own ruleset as well. I'm really curious about DTM's future but for now I'm happy the GT3-DTM seems to be working. CONFIRMED Abt - Audi - K. van der Linde Abt - Audi - R. Rast Abt - Audi - R. TOKsport not PROsport! PROsport absolutly hates the ITR, after the incidents in the DTM Trophy last year, as they withdrawn after the Red Bull Ring and will never come back to this platform! https://gt-place.com/2021/09/28/chri...und-gt4-geben/ https://gt-place.com/2021/09/06/nach...rophy-zurueck/ |

Does the announcement of Maximillian Paul in GT Masters effectively rule out a second T3 car for the DTM?

I believe it does. What it does for certain is it rules out Maximilian Paul in a possible second car.

Another very strong squad, this year's grid doesn't disappoint. Really curious to see Vanthoor not sharing a car with anyone. He's for sure one of the best GT drivers out there, let's see how he fares in a "touring car format."

According to Gerhard Berger there are 29 entries registered - most probably it means that T3 Motorsport will field a second car after all. Rumours say it'll be filled by no one else but Niki Thiim as Aston Martin can't offer him a decent programme and he's likely to be released from his AMR contract.
