Having viewed the various ootoob practice uploads it's amazing how thr hypers struggle to zap past the P2s and GT3s in certain psrts of the lap.

For example the little blast between the left hander Indianapolis and the right hander(??)

That could create all sorts of drama in the heat of battle when lappery takes place.

Appearances can be deceiving but from the same footage it appears that the Lambo and Toyota have some decent top end pace, whereas the Caddy, 963 and Ferrari are strong into and out of the corners.

Overall though, what a fabulous mix of csrs and sounds across the whole entry!!

entry!!
The LMP2 cars only weigh 950 kilograms. This is about 90-100kg lighter than the hypercars. As a result, they often carry higher apex speeds than the hyper cars. This can be seen at the ford chicanes, Arnage, and indianopolis. They just carry so much momentum through the corner. The hypercar cannot zip past.

The GT3 cars, although heavier seem to also have more traction at the exit of arnage.

Evolution of top speeds from session 1 to session 2 of the test day. It is an average of top speeds for all green flag laps where a representative value is measured at the speed trap. Essentially you get an idea which teams increased or reduced downforce and power levels for the second session.

2023 vs 2024 test day average top speeds:

Porsche, Toyota, and Peugeot all increased compared to last year. Cadillac similar to last year. Ferrari slightly down on last year.

I struggle to buy that Toyota doesn't have the pace. Both Ferrari and Toyota suggested that 10kg was worth 3-4 tenths at Le Mans.

The current gap in FP1 (meaningless, I know) is 3 tenths between 1st place Jota and 2nd place Toyota. If the Porsche gained 10kg (losing 3 tenths) due to a late bop adjustment, it would be the same weight as the Toyota, and have the same amount of average power over the lap (510-511 kW).

This would imply a complete performance equivalence of the Porsche LMDh and the Toyota LMH cars. This would be surprising given that we were led to believe LMH was superior to LMDh if they ran the same weight and power.

So from there you can more or less work backwards. With only a 10kg difference between the Porsche and the Toyota in Porsche's favor, and a negligible average power difference, The Porsche could not conceivably be any more than 1-1.5 tenths ahead in my calculations, with a flipside being the Toyota could be ahead overall because of our understanding that LMH is inherently faster and the need to peg them back to the level of LMDh. In that view, the amount that Toyota would be ahead is unbounded because at the current moment, I am not sure how much faster LMH is inherently to LMDh.

Also I'm pretty sure that LMH cars are carrying a little bit less of fuel due to more hybrid regen. That can be a tiny tiny difference however.

Stood trackside and I’m fairly certain a 911 going by on my dual carriageway would be louder than the two Manthey cars, really not sold on GT3 cars at Le Mans, such a shame. The hypercar Ferraris definitely sound a bit more fruity off throttle this year.

Toyota also has the fastest topspeed.

*edit*

I stand corrected, one of the Pugs is at 343 opposed to 338 for Toyota and Alpine.

8 feels a bit small. It should be 10 like the other rounds.

That was really interesting there at the end. A few laps got ruined by traffic in sector 3. We have some new manufacturers that are going to make a big splash (Alpine and BMW).
