That's a super shot Mal. With no debris fencing you feel as if you could almost reach out and touch it.... In the 'beauty' stakes, those cars were real lookers.....

One of the best Le Mans cars of all time. And yes, it's amazing how close you could get back then. Group C had certainly developed by then

Wow, Mal. And were is the fencing? I was there two years later and I’m sure there was fencing then.
Wow wow wow. |

Fencing along the straight (and most other parts of the circuit) arrived in 1996. I'm updating my 1996 story as it happens right now and I can still feel the shock I felt when I went onto the tribunes for the first time that year.....

I don’t remember that specifically. Mind plays tricks.
I watched the 1990 and 1991 start from there. I think by 1996 I was probably in a grandstand, maybe above the pits and it mattered less? |

Yep, the pits grandstand remains the one debris fencing-free haven!
(Although it wasn't there in 1990 - it arrived for the '91 race). |

I remember the first year of that. Fortunately my memory hasn’t forgot that change! No one refers to it as the Starship Enterprise anymore!

Does anyone else remember the fireworks when the "starship enterprise" was official opened, we were opposite in the stands and some of the fireworks headed straights for us, could have been some serious injuries that friday evening.

It’s ok to have a ceremony, but sounds like the usual organisation of Le Mans went out the window that day, if the fireworks were heading to you like missiles

I don't have access to photos from the Group C era where I am, but here are some Group C cars from the 2012 Legends race.

Ouch. I think I was probably having dinner in a campsite. I think we camped in Bleu that year after a late decision to go to the race.

A couple more from 1988 I think - I dont think health & safety was an issue back then! This was the best atmosphere I have ever experienced at Le Mans

Jeez, how much closer can you get. Safety had improved by then, but not by much if that's anything to go by. Still as you say Le Mans is about atmosphere and always will be.

That straight run downhill to the Esses was magical, especially at night. Shameful how it was desecrated....

I like the new curves, but am annoyed it replaced that iconic drop down and entry into the Esses. I find it hard to get a good photo of it. |

Over the 34 years I've been going, it's the change that I hate the most, even more than the chicanes.....

Chicanes were my first year. Shame I never saw it before. I guess you don’t really see that impact as a spectator (other than seeing the cars come round less in 24 hours!).

The sweep down from the Dunlop Bridge to the Forest Esses was exciting and of course we could still see why they were called Forest esses

Seems a tree disappears every year
And compare those photos to pictures from the ‘50s. |
