It's kind of what you would expect in that the general media seems to think it is a great idea. The general media also thinks 'The Bachelor" is a great idea. The Nascar media thinks it is contrived and I think many of the more educated Nascar fan (which, granted, are few and far between) seem to think the same.

The thing is, the media seems to discuss whether the new Chase system will work from a business point of view. Very few comment on whether it's fair and worthy from a sportive point of view.

Enhancements To NASCAR Penalty Structure, Appeals Process Announced: As part of its wide-ranging initiatives to transform its competition model, NASCAR today announced enhancements to its penalty structure and appeals process beginning this season. In addition to these changes, NASCAR also announced the appointment of a Final Appeals Officer for the sport.
"NASCAR's Deterrence System is designed to help maintain the integrity and competitive balance of our sport while sending a clear message that rules violations will not be tolerated," said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president of racing operations. "This is a more transparent and effective model that specifically spells out that 'X' infraction equals 'X' penalty for technical infractions. At the same time, we believe the Appeals process allows a fair opportunity for our NASCAR Members to be heard, and have penalty disputes resolved by an impartial, relevant group of people with the ability to handle the complexities inherent in any appeal. This system has been tailored specifically to fit the needs of our sport."
Bryan Moss, former president at Gulfstream Aerospace, has been selected as the Final Appeals Officer. Moss will hear matters on appeal from the lower three-member Appeals Panel, and serve as the last decision on penalty disputes for the sport.
NASCAR's Deterrence System NASCAR's Deterrence System is easily understood and specifically lays out exactly what disciplinary action will be taken depending on the type of technical infraction listed from warnings to six penalty levels in ascending order.
The 2014 Rule Book will explain how and why NASCAR issues penalties as well as the factors considered when determining a penalty. The Rule Book also will detail the types of infractions that fall within each level by citing examples.
The National Motorsports Appeals Panel The new Appeals process continues to provide two tiers for resolving disputes. On the first level before a three-member Appeals Panel, NASCAR has the burden of showing that a penalty violation has occurred. On the second and final level, only a NASCAR Member is allowed to appeal and they have the burden of showing the Final Appeals Officer that the panel decision was incorrect.(NASCAR)
see the six penalty levels, types of infractions, appeals changes in the full release as well as the Appeals Flow Chart and Deterrence Chart on my 2014 Penalties page.(2-4-2014)

And this is the part that is just untrue: "maintain the integrity...of our sport." THAT is now gone with their dumbass points/championship system. Gone.

I think it is actually true, because they are simply trying to maintain the current levels of integrity. They didn't claim to have high integrity, just that it was going to stay the same.

You're correct, sir, if going by that comparison, similar to the integrity of Halliburton.

Funny to mention halliburton because i am currently on the Louisiana coast with multiple offshore oil industry ships emblazoned with their logo just down the road. Plus if I were really worried about high integrity would I be living in Louisiana?

What is this National Motorsports Appeals Panel? Is it run by ACCUS, or is it actually a Nascar entity?

It's not clear, but I believe - much like the previous panel - it's a NASCAR entity.

And that was "Craillsly", too. Another big point made is that NASCAR have completely alienated their core fanbase, but that news is at least a decade and a half old. See the Chase and the subsequent waning of interest up to now.

Duck Dynasty to replace National Rifle Association as sponsor for Texas Spring Night race.

They sure do know their demographics down in the Republic of Tejas, hopefully Chick-Fil-Fabulous sponsors the Nationwide race.

The new playoff system is a mess and it's not like it matters - Jimmie Johnson will find a way to win the championship anyway.

I like the qualifying changes, however, and I'm super pumped to finally see the #3 back on track. It's where it belongs, damnit. Oh, and I quite like the Cheerios paint scheme

But wait, there's more!

Quote:
Sprint Cup officials explain rule changes ahead of Daytona 500: On Thursday, NASCAR competition officials held their version of "Meet the Press" at the NASCAR R&D Center in Concord, N.C. The atmosphere was cordial and conducive to discussion. Some of the more important explanations included the claim that the new Chase points system was more than three years in the making. Bonus points after Richmond count only in the first round of the Chase. Thereafter, pre-Chase bonus points will not be counted after each of the final resets. Awarding more points to winners was considered and discarded because it might create a runaway situation. In other words, NASCAR didn't want the Sprint Cup title to be clinched at any point before the series finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
As for the new qualifying rules, announced before last week's media tour, we learned that, at first, many crew chiefs were against permission to make any changes to the cars in between sessions. But, after careful consideration, they lobbied for certain concessions, like changing tape (changing downforce), wedge alterations (for handling) and other minor changes. Flat tires in qualifying? NASCAR officials said one scuff (or scuffed-in) tire, not a matched set.
Also, though the qualifying schedule runs less than one hour when you add up the length of the knockout sessions, if all things go smoothly in the three-segment shootout, the television window will more likely go 90 minutes to account for breaks. One journalist asked about explaining to fans what happens in the case that the fastest lap is set in segment one -- perhaps even a track record -- but someone else gets the pole? NASCAR said it's the media's job to explain that.
As for the penalty system -- now known as the deterrent system -- the graphics published last week are a guide, but not a final, final answer. NASCAR always reserves the right to invoke its "EIRI" rule, also known as "except in rare instances."
Speaking of rules, at some point this year the rules will go electronic, meaning all teams will have instant access to technical updates.(AutoWeek)(2-7-2014)

This makes my head hurt. NASCAR becoming like big brother making rules just to make rules.

Please get back to basics! That was the appeal for me even into the Chase era; it WAS the most simple form of motor racing, and now they are just pulling rules out of a hat on a weekly basis.

And putting rules into electronic form? Welcome to the 2000s, NASCAR. It will still say on the last electronic page, "must be approved by NASCAR."

Even the longest church service is more entertaining than a 'race' at Tejas Motor Speedway.

How anybody can stay in the grandstands for these 1.5 mile aero festivals for 3 hours is beyond me. I'm guessing it's Bud Light, narcotics or perhaps the Bacon Beer Milkshakes* but I can't be sure.
