The thing was, the racing was just as exciting. Some of the opening lap battles in the ETCC races of the mid-80s were crackers. A fair share of passing, and rarely any paint swapped.
Worth remembering though that the variety in the cars gave each individual car strengths and weaknesses at different parts of the circuit. The problem with 'standard' rules in Touring Car racing these days (2L in BTCC, WTCC etc, 5L in Australia) is that cars are generally all the same in each area of the circuit, making passing points hard to come by, and forcing some into the tactics we see today. |
