Hasn’t the option of a control engine been around since the introduction of COTF in 2013?

Volvo were going to run with Chev engines in 2017 after all until GRM went Holden instead

https://www.supercars.com/news/champ...-mostert-deal/

BMW has declared its interest in a full-time deal with Chaz Mostert for 2020, as the Supercars star approaches the end of his current contract with Tickford Racing.
So, that's something Chaz has to decide – where does he enjoy himself most. Is it mainly in Australia? Or is it on a bigger scale?

“And then obviously, yeah, I would be absolutely happy to talk to him about plans that we could do together.

Yeah there's a control engine somewhere, which is literally a crate Chev.

Having a Chev engine in the Volvo's was considered, but Garry in the end said it's the whole package or nothing. Given the efforts put into the engine and everything else the team put together, he didn't want to water it down. And Volvo wanted out, so in the end they worked it out.

The Volvo allegedly tested with the Chev engine aboard before the Polestar Yamaha showed up..

No real shock, but: BMW aren't coming to play in Supercars

Meanwhile:
Walkinshaw now hopes one of two new manufacturers are on the grid in 2022

So we may assume BMW was one of these two manufacturers that were in advanced talks with WAU prior to Covid-19 pandemic.
It's interesting what manufacturers are now involved in some early talks. Is Chevrolet among them?

EDIT
Now I've read General Motors is not taken into account.

Ok so lets make a list of potential manufacturers. If we discount low volume (relative) manufacturers, and take into account the demographics of the brands who are we left with?
BMW no
Mercedes Benz no
Jaguar no

Toyota, Kia, Hyundai, are about the only real possibilities.

But most manufacturers are against putting someone elses (V8) engine in their car so that drops all of these out...
It may be different if the engine rules made turbo V6 or 4 cylinders a realistic option, but current power levels are too high for that to be a serious (affordable) option.

Personally I would like to see a power to weight ratio formula that would allow a turbo 4 to compete with the N/A V8.

With Roger rumoured to be gone will there be competition when there isn't more than ten million a year to be spent?

Yeah will the DJR team survive or be AS competitive without the Penske support?

Apparently not, sticking with the Commodore until the end of 2021 and then a new brand for Gen 3.

Penske will be gone (according to rumours after this year) but DJR will survive with Ryan Story taking the full ownership. I think they won't be that bad

I really cannot see any major changes in any team cars in 2021. Given the current situation, I think everyone will be happy to get another year out of their existing cars before all change in 2022.

Hyundai Australia should have a few million dollars to splash about as I believe their sponsorship of the a league has ended

There are huge problems mixing turbo/NA/4 cylinder/6 cylinder etc. It is easy enough to get the same power figure but another thing altogether to get the same performance curve from different enging configurations, in fact it is damn near impossible. That fact alone would mix up things enough to make it interesting but those who are parity devotees would not like it.

The trouble is, people want engine parity right down to the enth degree. Not always possible, so concessions need to be made, rules rewritten, etc.

Wait, hadn't we seen this before with the DOHC engines?

There was a story I was sent that linked Paul Morris to the DJR continuity alongside Ryan, with Will Davison and ADP as the drivers.

With Peter Adderton and Paul Morris controlling teams this timeline seems familiar
