Andrew, I love your pictures. I was wondering, do you have a desktop photo available for the Audi photo at Turn 5 that is fully in the dark with the lights very bright. It is in the fourth set of photos (meaning I clicked the right arrow three times) at the very bottom in the left column? I just love that picture.

on monday night in london i was at the sja/sport england sports journalist and sports photographer of the year awards. i was nominated for a picture in the "elite athlete with disability" category, which i took while i was out working for getty at last years paralympics. in the end i was 2nd, but still get a highly commended certificate...and barry davies read my name out!
anyway....heres the picture, the now famous igor the no armed swimmer, or "spirit of athens" as i called it. click to see it a bit larger. Last edited by kdr; 9 Mar 2005 at 11:49. |

congrats, so THATS the story behind the shot. Not having followed the paralympics, and therefore not knowing any of the athletes, I'd always figured you had played around with framing/blue flags or something of that nature to do a nudge/nudge sort of thing in reference to armless Greek statues.......
congrats again about being nominated and all that. djb |

thanks djb. when i first opened it up on the laptop i wasn't going to send it in, it looked a little too obvious and plain, but i'm glad i did now...i love the look of determination in his face. a lot of people have said it looks like his arms have been photoshopped off...i guess its the plain background and the shallow depth of field that does sort of give that impression.
i did no real work on it at all other than the normal brightness and contrast...and i only managed to bang off two frames, one where he's looking down, and that one. he'd pulled his t-shirt off with his teeth...thats what caught my attention. i spent quite a few nights at the pool, there was always a great atmosphere in the arena, but i usually shot from round about halfway...so i rarely was in line for the end of a race, but someone told me that when igor was finishing he had to touch the pool deck with his head to register his time. its stories like that and the other many little things i saw that made me feel very humble, yet enjoy the entire 2 weeks so much. |

nope btracer...straight from the camera....it was on a canon, i think it was on a 400mm. his name is igor plotnikov, he was about to take part in the freestyle. he also competed in the backstroke...for that he had to climb into the water, then a helper on the pool deck offered him a towel which he held in his teeth. then feet firmly on the pool wall...he would start just like an able bodied swimmer.
