They did a dvd of the second supersaloon meeting at Oulton Park in 1975. "Winning ain't easy" is the title. Also on that is drag racing, saloon cars and rallying. That's the one with Gerry dicing with Alec Poole in the white Skoda 2.0. I was at Lodge that day. That's the only dvd of supersaloons that I know about.

Spec-R Hart Escort
Was the Skoda coming up on Tony Sugden's Escort?
Tony's Escort was the 1.9 all steel shelled car that he won races in 1973. Nice car but heavy compared to the new lightweight Special Saloons that appeared in 1974 to 1979, such as this Hart space framed Escort. |

Tony won races in that car, I assume it was the same one, right through to around 1977-78. Latterly he had a full BDX in it. The car stayed pretty much the same looking though

Hart Escort of Spec-R.
Quote:
This car may even achieve slightly lighter figures of under 500kg after restoration with the use of lighter materials. It has the makings of being as quick or even quicker than the space framed Skoda's and possible even quicker than big Gerry Marshall's Vauxhall. Gerry Marshall's car must have been a lot heavier as it was only part space framed, if I remember correctly, and Gerry was a big lump, but could handle a car like a Go Kart. |

Hart Space Framed Escort.
Most racing saloons weighing in at around 795kg is light by any standards, so this makes this Hart Escort super light at 508kg's.
With the right modern day set-ups, tyre technology and brake materials this Hart Escort has the potential of being the fastest special saloon around, as long as the driver can push it to TenTenths, excuse the pun. |

Hi Graham. What was the date of that race meeting and which Oulton layout was it on (full or Fosters)? I know we were entered but didn't race for some reason either because we didn't get the car ready until the day before the July GP meeting at Silverstone or blew the engine up at Rufforth at the end of August which put paid to the rest of the season.
Is your dad still around? |

Very sorry to hear about your dad he was a very competitive and succesful racer. Did he race anything after the Escort? I don't remember seeing his name much after 1976 but after I retired from racing in 1977 for twelve years I wasn't around the racing scene during that time.

Geoff Wood Hart Escort Special Saloon.
Quote:
The use of a lightweight full space frame, mid 'Hart' engine and GP technology was always the dream of many of us racers in the 1970's and Geoff working with Cyril Malem achieved possibly the best set up a Special Saloon could have in it's day, but it needed lots of testing to get the best lap times out of it and Geoff Wood had his work to consider. Many other special saloon owner/drivers went on to copy Geoff's car, especially on the Mk2 Escorts and I have always believed this Hart Escort is a special car and we cant wait to see it restored and if it's raced by an aggressive driver, watch the lap times tumble. Yes, my father did build another car after this escort but it was very short lived as it totally destroyed its engine after 6 laps private testing at Silverstone first time out, found to be a stone got into one of the the fuel injection trumpets and took a piston then the rod etc... he did beat the 2 litre lap record in that short time though ! The engine of that car was from British Vita racing who were pulling the plug on their racing at that time so that was the end of his racing.
Thank you for your generous comments on my father and his car, he certainly was ahead of the "game" with his vision. I can appreciate Cyril's involvement with the car but we must also remember that Geoff and Len Terry the chassis designer put pen to paper and worked things out as dad had in his mind, no discredit to Cyril and his chassis construction skill's as he built to their plans. F1 engineers Len Terry and Cyril Malem
Quote:
Len Terry was active in designing many of the Grand Prix cars for Lotus, BRM and Eagle, with his last major contract from BRM, who wanted their F1 car to accept a V12 engine, this was known as the P207 and competed in the 1977 F1 World Championship. After this he became involved with several non F1 projects until his retirement in the late 1990's and he passed away in 2014. Cyril Malem and Len Terry had a very good working and personal relationship and much of the important fabrication work went to Cyril, who was considered the best in his field. That is why this Hart Escort is so very rare. The futuristic idea's of Geoff Wood working with Len Terry enabled this race car to be designed and engineered using Grand Prix F1 technology by F1 engineers, which makes this Hart Escort a SPECIAL SALOON. Hart Escort Special Saloon
Open injection trumpets at the front of these Special Saloon Mini's were always in danger of swallowing debris and causing untold damage to the engine.
We always put mesh over the trumpets. In one instance tea strainers did the job perfectly. |

Hart Escort Special Saloon @ Spec-R Alloy
GREAT NEWS! Cyril Malem Legendary Historic F1 Chassis Builder turned up at the workshop today and spent the whole day with me and authenticated that he in association with famous chassis designer Len Terry designed and built this one off full space framed Mk1 Hart Escort for Geoff Wood.
Cyril confirmed the chassis is totally original from the day he built it in 1973 at his factory (CTG RACING) in Ferndown Dorset. |
