When asked about the cause of the Spa qualifying accident, Funke rejected the notion that it was caused by a lack of tire warmers which is a new rule in the WEC this year.

“He had a purple last sector and the lap before,” said Funke. “We’re just analyzing. The tires were there – it wasn’t cold tires.”

Is there a Quali replay available somewhere?

Assuming WEC's definition is "4 wheels fully over the white line", it makes it a clear violation. It shouldn't be because running over - and through - the gravel like that is almost certainly slowing down the car (albeit not by much). Now if there's tarmac behind the rumble strips, then yeah, advantage gained. In this instance, I don't believe he did. But that's how the rules are. Every driver knows and every driver will try as hard as they can, risking getting their lap nulled.

I'd be in favor of not applying the track limits clause for non-tarmac surfaces, it's all part of the risk vs. reward ratio. Let them risk it (and pay the on track price when overdoing it).

for the drivers and teams who actually know what they're doing, there's zero difference. the key is patience, and actually remembering they're cold.

as per previous comments.... nah, it's really not a weather thing. daytona 2022 overnight you were sticking tyres on the car at zero degreees centigrade, so like, mid to late 30s in freedom units. no real issues because drivers and teams were prepared. it wasn't exactly warm first thing in the morning during the prologue at barcelona last week either.

this season you'll see the difference between teams, drivers and engineers who have imsa experience and who have examined and revised their procedures, and those who are just using the same processes as they did when they used ovens and blankets.

you'll notice none of the whinging is coming from imsa-experienced drivers...

Sounds like it makes it more difficult and that they have to work out how to cope. It strikes me this requires skill.

Going to be interesting in the race.

Tire temps were a major issue last year at the Rolex. The inside of the pit exit wall at Turn 1 had plenty of proof to show for! Btw, 0 Celsius is 32 Fahrenheit, not mid or higher 30s. My toes would have liked the latter much better, trust me!

What was most evident was that during FP3 Toyota looked mortal, due to a wet to damp track. During that time, Ferrari and Porsche were owning the time sheets,, with Cadillac and Peugeot not too far behind.

If the race weather forecast calls for similar wet conditions, expect more of this...

Indeed, another aspect of driving to manage. And with the reduced tyre allocations, keeping your tires in shape throughout the stint is increasingly important.

Assuming that the number 8 toyota has a clean race, if they performed like the did in the past few races and the competition has not closed in the gap as much, the number 8 can finished the race in second place.

The slick runners will still have to feel out the track for a few laps if they've lost temperature. That's the danger stage for them.

Well, wet benefits the Ferraris,... with Porsche and Cadillac close behind. Drying now, but let another cell moves in, this will continue,
