Good pole by Dixon, sets up for an interesting race this grid. Great effort by Power to get in after being in danger of not making it

How can Penske / Power be so far off. Clearly nobody on the USA feed wanted to address the subject

Qualifying Results - Pole Day.
Honda take 7 of the Fast Nine places. The first Chevrolet powered car, out side of the Fast Nine is in 12th place on the grid, driven by Pato O'Ward. |

Well Ed has been fast at Indy and mostly only Indy with a few runs up toward the front at Texas. I'm picturing him speaking with the car like Robert Duvall in Days of Thunder and getting each chassis perked up and ready to run

Even though he's already an Indy 500 winner, I think there's a little bit of pressure on Dixon to get up.
When you consider that the two big accomplishments in Indycars are the championship and the 500. The 6 championships and 1 Indy 500 win seems quite an imbalance. |

Mario Andretti may be accomplished but 1 win is a bit short for the career he's had.
I'm just saying I think it'd quietly grate on Scott a bit that he's only experienced the glory of Indy only once. |

The thing is Indy 500 isn’t all about skill, you also need all the cards to fall for you.

'The money in F1 was good, yes, but it was road courses only, and I liked ovals. I could see CART getting strong and I liked the variety of CART with short ovals, long ovals, street circuits and permanent road circuits. I felt you had to be a more well-rounded driver to win the CART championship and I liked the Penske team and the association we had there. To me, CART was more competitive and more challenging' Some interesting comments in the article about the difference between F1 and CART - I wonder if the same changes are still true today? 'The characteristics of the F1 car were completely different [...] you have to hustle an F1 car harder. The first time I drove the Brabham I was a couple of seconds off the pace, and that was because I was driving it like an Indy car – smooth and steady, not making any bobbles, not touching the curbs. I was using all the track but not over-using it, and I was a couple of seconds off. I thought, ‘What’s wrong here?’ So I got mad and started driving the **** out of that thing. I started sliding it and pitching it sideways and bouncing it off and over the curbs. Then I got down to competitive times. I discovered you’ve got to change your way of thinking when you drive an F1 car. It’s a stand-on-the-gas, bang-it-off-the-curbs-every-lap type of thing. In that type of racing, you can’t pace yourself. It’s a flat-out deal all the time.' |

Indy wins vs US open wheel championships is rarely a direct correlation. For that matter wins at Monaco aren't correlated to F1 driver championships either. It's a single event very different that others with more cars, even in the heyday 33 was the biggest fields, and much higher speeds for longer than other events. It was won by guys who drove a particular manner and may not translate to a full season and lost but guys who had blisteringly fast but fragile cars that could run most events but Indy took it out of them. See the cars and drivers who were out front on pace at 475 miles and didn't win, it's not a short list |

I'm still baffled that IndyCar sold the television rights in Hispanic America to Claro, and let them make it nearly impossible to watch it.
