Previously a coal miner, Metropolitan Police Cadet, Cost Accountant and now happily retired ex-co-owner of fairly large plastics processing company. If you like the plastic milk bottle (4 pint size, etc) my business partner designed it; if you do not like it, someone else did! Nearest thing to full time work now is the work I do for the Marshals' Club!

My first job on leaving school was with a firm of electrical wholesalers. Apart from 2 years when I was Practice Administrator for a small firm of lawyers, the rest of my working life has been in property departments of various law firms - started off doing residential conveyancing then moved to commercial property. Since February this year I've been a Legal Secretary in the Child Care Department of a reasonable sized firm of lawyers. We deal with children in care and sometimes the cases can be particularly harrowing but the job satisfaction is immense even though the salary isn't!

I am self-unemployed.

I work as a contract software trainer and instructional designer (an off-shoot of technical writing). Given the US economy, there's not much work to be had at the moment. I might have to fold my business and become an employee again.

Does that mean you count the houses already built so you know how many more are needed?

Seriously, I have not heard the term before. What does a Quantity Surveyor do?

We procure everything you need to build a house from bricks to bathrooms. We also establish a budget on how much it's going to cost, administer contracts and report on cost control all the way through the development.

So we're money men basically.

Happy to help

There are plenty of circuits in between Lands End and John O Groats... how about sending some boxes of Cornish pasties to the marshals?! Purely to develop your business by obtaining invaluable feedback of course

I manage the team that puts into plain English what has happened, publishes it to the National Rail website and advises the customers, National Rail Enquiries advisors & the media why the trains are not running, again.

And I love it, despite it taking away many free weekends at the moment
