The latest on LMP2 engines:

Quote:
[ACO Sporting Director Vincent] Beaumesnil said the tender for the spec LMP2 engine is aimed at independent tuners, such as the likes of AER and Judd, and not car manufacturers, which have previously supported the second-tier prototype ranks.

A decision on the engine tender is expected to be made in July, along with the selection of approved chassis constructors, which had initially been proposed as a limit of four manufacturers.
And:

Quote:
Beaumesnil said nothing has been decided on the possibility of branding chassis as well.
More here.

From an interview to Mike Lancaster from AER

Quote:
We have talked to other teams, some from LMP2 who are considering going in to the top stream in LMP1 for 2016. It should be an attractive class and with more entrants can blossom in to something really good I think. The future looks bright for endurance racing and we very much want to be the market leaders for LMP teams whether privateer or otherwise

Bit dated now being from March, but interesting read.

However, as positive as it may seem, there's been rumors and half to almost full guarantees of people committing P1 ever since the new fuel rules were released, but only one besides Rebellion has actually materialized. So I take that "talk" with grain of salt. The new spec&boring LMP2 might have changed some peoples opinions, but we'll see.

I'm not sure I also agree with the "attractiveness" of P1-P/P1-L/P1-Non-Hybrid/P1-whatever-the-****-it's-called-now, when it's solely run in WEC as some weird sub class, and certainly not with current performance levels.

Anyway, at least AER seems happy which is good. They just need competition...

I see it this way Creating Sub Classes for the Primary Class makes no sense . Rumors aside Who besides Rebellion want to go that route ? Kolles ?

Once you open a subclass it is probaly going to be quite hard to remove it . Which leads to WHAT is next ? LMP2 L , LMP3 L , GTE L ? Where does the insanity end ?

It has been tried here in the USA and turned into a total Disaster with the upper classes

We already have way more annoying sub classification than P1-P/L-/N-H/whatever, and it is called LMGTE-AM. At least in the P1 sub division they are actually built to slightly different technology and specificiations (ERS0 and stuff), but GTE-AM is there for no reason other than artificially trying to please off everybody. The fact that you can even run same full blown factory cars in that "Amateur category" just makes further mockery out of it. Especially in world championship and world's biggest motor race.

Anyway, pleasing every party is indeed the buzz word of today. Next to sub classes you also have these mandatory pro-am class restrictions that didn't exist anywhere in ACO land five years ago.

Well I suppose there is 2 sides to every argument .Not sure on the Artificially trying to please everybody . Does the LMGTE-Am class not allow the Yutes to move up the motorsports Ladder ? After they have proven themselves in lesser classes ?

There is another argument to be made for Gentleman Drivers though " You Want To Play You Got To Pay " comes to mind . Field Fillers or extra Revenue for the Promoters and Team Owners

I thought we already had THREE regional series - and bunch and bunch of pro-am classes in them - for such a thing already? And that's not me making things up either, the ACO has officially labelled it as "pyramid of endurance" on their marketing.

At this moment LMP1L has one engine, AER (just one). But where are the frame options? The Oreca has a strong tie with Rebellion and nobody is going to buy a CLM....

Certainly I can't see any aditional option but smoke, maybe Oak-ligier (but just a small maybe). The Honda P1 doesn't exist, the Dome was never constructed and they had lots of problems with the P2 and the Perrinn is nothing but a real scale model

All the new P2 cars, are P1 compatible. They need to change suspension and part of the bodywork to match P1 wide regulations.

So, you have DOME, Oreca, Onroak and the new BR-01. Engines? Judd, Zytek, Honda.

Yes, P1 compatible but probably the only one thing in common will be the frame. Suspensions, engine, gearbox, brakes, electronics, etc. are totally different, with different weighs and different dimensions. That means a completelly different car with the same frame and maybe same aerodinamic (just maybe)

Considering the amount of problems Rebellion and Kolles had last year perhaps the cheapest way to win privateer P1 is to enter a P2 as P1 with minimal changes to improve the pace.

You got a point there.

What if that is ACO/FIA's goal?

Take the current P2's, give them a few breaks to up their pace.
Then reduce the pace of the new stock engine and P2 chassis.
Peg the Hybrid LMP's further back (something we know will happen) so they are very close to the up-paced P2's.
Slow down the GTE's some there the performance gap between GTE and LMP2 continues to exist.

That way you would get the LMP1-H closer to the wished 3:30 limit.
You would get a huge boost in private LMP1's
LMP2 will be restarted as the "cheap" Prototype at Le Mans.

Everybody should win on that account.
(and don't start the 3:30 Lap time discussion, that I will rekindle in the LMP future regulations thread)

I wondered a lot about that last year. Given the pace of the P1 privateers vs the P2 cars it seemed like it wouldn't take much to make the P2's faster. Maybe engine tweeks, maybe less weight, that would be good for some time right?

Anyways, it will be good to see the Rebellion back out with the new engine.

There will be the day.... at least as long rules stay open in LMP1 engines, that will never happen, there is much more to the story than max hp number, and hybrid is a heck of a performance enhancer...

All in all i can't see what on earth are they trying to accomplish but to ruin an all class if the not the all championship, if the disease spreads to all classes...

Perhaps is exactly that, ruin it!!... ppl everywhere are praising WEC, are praising the openness of rules (even TV commentators)... F1 is in the dwindling, and as a tech window F1 has nothing that road cars can use, not even the hybrid systems as they are, not even the cars by a log shot, because nobody drives a Moto4 in their day to say usage... yet a huge business around the all F1 circus, huge interests... lets not spoil it !... or... ACO be damn... WEC be damn...

And i wonder why this 3:30 number, why is it relevant in the slightest phantom brain fart of imagination, and the conclusion is that it can only came out after a journey to Wonderland with Alice(perhaps with the help of forbidden substances)... if this year the times can very well be below the 3:20, slowing that much LMP1 is very short of an outright ban !... perhaps it will be less expensive to build a new car from a clean sheet than try the whole panoply of tricks the rules will 'enforce' to try to slow them down... oh!... LMP1 be damn to! ( the same Boring1 tech retard business must go on).

Politics in motorsport are confusing (better said 'contra-natura')... rules therefor tend to be confusing... and very restricted...

Does anyone know about Ben Bowlby's involvement with the Zytek/Gibson body kit? I didn't know anything about it until this video : https://youtu.be/XInuKQIpKfQ

It makes sense since that car (especially Jota) always has the most Nissan stickers. But I'd like to know:
-are we talking about the 2014 LM kit or the 2015 kit? BTW what's the difference between the 2? What's the extent of the modifications?
-who else was involved? (he surely didn't do it alone)
-did they use a wind tunnel or just CFD?

Either way, it's an interesting bit of information for me since the car is pretty much unbeatable even though it dates back to the 2001 Reynard 02S. It seems Bowlby really is a clever dude (who's looking forward to easier projects according to the video).

His involvement was mentioned in an interview on DSC today. I took it to mean he helped with the new bodywork for this year making it the Gibson rather than the Zytek.

Completely unnoticed by the rest of the world, the Bailey LMP2 has, after all, started racing in South Africa. It took part in the 2 Hours of Kyalami 3 weeks ago.

Does it comply to LMP2 rules? They took some time to make it running...I remember i read about it already in 2011, more or less.

I don't know if it complies to LMP2 rules. According to the Bailey website, there are two versions of the car: A fully LMP2-compliant one, and a cheaper, South Africa exclusive version.

So with seemingly Bailey & Pilbeam both circulating in South Africa, there's just as much LMP2 cars up there as in the entire North America (in ACO aknowledged championship) now with Speedsource scaling back to just single Lola. And the same should go for AsLMS. Ahahahh
